4 - The Bargain
Florence sat in the tin bath with her legs drawn up to her chest, arms wrapped tight around them, and her forehead resting on her knees. She wasn’t entirely sure how long she had been sat in that position, but the water had grown tepid and was now much cooler than the surrounding air. Despite this Florence didn’t feel cold, although she could not stop her teeth from chattering. Her skin was pink from where she had scrubbed it raw in a desperate effort to remove all traces of sticky saliva that still lingered upon its surface. She shuddered at the memory of her assailant’s clammy touch; his rancid breath, his rough tongue thrusting down her throat. Strangely, she was a lot less bothered by the memories of almost being swallowed whole. The event would almost certainly give her nightmares for years to come, but really, what else had she expected the faerie king to do? Throw her a tea party? Upon her return home Florence had immediately sought out her mother, who was nowhere to be found.
