Welcome to the world's first true glimpse into the reality of the new skinning application known as Hyperdesk, here exclusively on DeviantART and brought to you by mrrste

Introduction

For those who do not know, The Skins Factory www.theskinsfactory.com/skinsf… will soon be launching a new application to the world called Hyperdesk. If you don't know who The Skins Factory are, then wakey wakey, but I doubt this is the case :p

Hyperdesk will be a new way to customise your PC using what will be known as Hypersuites. A Hypersuite will consist of an msstyle based skin, Icons, Wallpapers, Media player skin/controller and a widget. All can be changed at once with the click of a button.

I was recently and exclusively given the privilege of trying out this new program by Jeff. Jeff ie Jeff Schader is the Founder and CEO of The Skins Factory and he sent me the new Sony Ericsson Onyx Series Hypersuite to play with. As I am the first person outside of his company to get my hands on this, you better believe I grabbed the opportunity ;-)

I will not be showing you guys anything other than what has already been shown of it because it is to remain a surprise and I will honour that.

However, below is the teaser of the Sony Ericsson Onyx Series Hypersuite that I have tried ;-)

Sony Ericsson Hypersuite by skinsfactory

The Hyper Hype

There has been a lot written about this new program. Many have dismissed it before it has even been released, stating that the method in which it skins is unstable and problematic but many are awaiting, with open arms, something that has the potential to have a big impact inside and outside of the skinning community.

So who is right? I will attempt to address the optimists and pessimists from an un-biased point of view. My words and opinions are not those of DeviantART, but of my own, a customisation enthusiast. I am not here to
big it up and I am not here to slam it. Only you as a user can truly decide.

The Hyper Reality

No one truly expected anything other than quality work from The Skins Factory, especially on the graphics side of things, and you won't be disappointed.

The Interface

After the initial install, reboot and launch, I was presented with a very sexy and easy to operate interface. It actually reminds me of a flash based interface on websites. From here you select the skin variant (as this particular skin comes in 6 different colours), the wallpaper (again, 6 to choose from) etc.

It's just a case of click, select and apply. It's that easy. Usually the experience comes after you apply a skin, but the interface here definitely adds to the experience. Before you even apply the suite, you feel like you are about to get something special.

The Skin

It looks and feels exactly how you would expect an msstyle based skin would on XP. However, the skin is very well made both graphically and functionally that it does not scream out that it's msstyle based. You can tell a lot of work went into making this usable as well as visually impressive. It works very well and so far I have not seen any issues you can get when it comes to skinning certain applications. Usually some programs need to be excluded from being skinned, so far, this is not the case.

One thing I do like is that it works totally fine with Styler Toolbar, meaning you can customise your experience a little more.

The Icons

To be honest, the icons are my favourite part of this suite. Yes the skin is impressive, but the icons are little works of art in their own right. The bigger they are the better they look. The detail and work in
these icons is amazing. Even at the average desktop size they do not loose quality. I really can't find fault with them except that I would like to see more but you do get a good number anyway ;-)

The Media Player

This is what The Skins Factory do best. This particular media player is not in the same league as their Alienware or Batman skins say, but it is still a very sleek and well designed skin. I am not a big fan of WMP anyway but they definitely make me manage to forget that :D

The Wallpaper

There is 6 wallpapers in total to choose from. Each one to match the colour variants of the theme. They match the theme perfectly. They are not over the top in detail but compliment the theme very well. I prefer
a more simplistic wallpaper anyway so I was more than happy with these.

The Extras

With this particular theme you get an additional 6 variants of the already included wallpapers. They are not a huge change from the standard ones but I actually prefer these. You also get all of the Icons in .png format so you can use them how you wish ie in a dock etc.

The Conclusion

You will notice that I did not go into great depth describing every little detail and you may have been left with questions. The reason I did this is because the ultimate experience is to be a surprise. Only teaser's  have been shown and I didn't want to spoil this but you should have got a feel for what to expect.

Overall I was impressed. I can't say I expected not to be, especially from the awesome teaser's The Skins have shown. However, I left msstyles behind years ago for Windowblinds by Stardock and I have never looked back. Using msstyles again just reminded me why I did. They simply cannot compare in quality and features that Windowblinds gives you but that does not mean that msstyles, or this product are ultimately bad. Both have their good and bad points and both have their own fan base. Many people will always choose msstyles over windowblinds and that is more than evident from the thousands of msstyles out there.

Does this mean I won't use Hyperdesk? No way. I can appreciate quality when I see it and just because these are msstyles does not mean you won't see it either. They may lack all the bells and whistles that you get with something like windowblinds but if they are done just right then it really does not matter. The Skins Factory have managed to make their skins to this "just right" standard for Hyperdesk. You forget it's an msstyle and just appreciate it for what it is, a well made, great looking and nice experience when using it.

When Vista support is added you better believe I'll use Hyperdesk as well as Windowblinds. I have seen skins that have not been shown or that anyone else knows about outside of TSF. I know some future plans for Hyperdesk that are "Top Secret". I have seen what their website will look like. It's all certainly going to bring something impressive to the community. I would be foolish not to want to use Hyperdesk just because it uses a format I am personally not a fan of. It's the skins I'm concerned with. If this was a new company coming out with this product, I may not expect it to do as well, but because you know TSF are going to give you quality every time, you know it will do well.

Hyperdesk is not going to turn people msstyles lovers, no more than Stardock can make people Windowblind lovers or Linux make people Gnome lovers. They all offer something that appeals to an individual personally and this is what it is all about. Only you, the user, can truly decide what is right for you. It is another skinning solution I will use for sure because I am a fan of TSF work but it will never be the only skinning solution I use.

I hope you have taken something from this and you now look more forward to getting your hands on Hyperdesk more than ever. Quality, design and usability are what you will get. Don't expect less from The Skins Factory as this other teaser shows all too well

Oh and here is a screen shot of the actual email. Apparently "unedited" has a different meaning in the UK than it does in the US according to Stacy here:

[link]

You'll notice that his email doesn't stop where he stops it above. So not only do you harass, threaten and swear at people, your also a liar. I bet you make your parents are proud.

LOL. The end of your comment right there would be enough to convince many people that this other guy was actually telling the truth. You're so rude

Damn. Didn't see this whole drama unfolding within this review. Liking how they keep spamming with "Will not work with Windows 7 64-bit" and someone told them that it does lol

For all of those interested, here is a "Customer Support" exchange between a customer and employee of Hyperdesk;

Jesh, Aug 31 13:11 (EDT):
You know what? You're a rude prick. I'll refund your money. Don't contact us again.

Pjdetloff1, Aug 31 13:05 (EDT):
Dear "Customer Support" agent. I apologize for my hasty regard to your company. Unfortunately I have had someone close to me pass away recently and it has not made me the most pleasant person to be around. This does not give me the excuse to be rude to anyone even if I feel that I may have been taken advantage of financially. Thank you for reminding me of my own personal flaws, through your lack of actual care for your company's "pleasant" reputation of what I am sure will continue to be horrible customer support.

In regard to your extremely rude way of asking me for my order number it is as follows, 54046016
I did download the 64-Bit windows 7 skin, applied it as instructed and all that happened was as I stated previously, the wallpaper changed and the icons did. The widget does not seem to work on my computer, but I was not as concerned with that. Also, please inform me of that way to reach your manager, or to reach your highest supervisor it would be very much appreciated. Once again I apologize for my hasty reaction in the previous message. It was unnecessary and uncalled for, enjoy your day.

Jesh, Aug 31 12:45 (EDT):
Oh we try to make a habit of "ripping people off". It's a great business model and one that will lead our company to success. How about an order number to start? And there's no sound fx accept for the widget and the actual application. Not for Windows itself. Did you even download the proper version? I don't know because you were so busy asking us if we "ripped you off" you didn't include it.

Pjdetloff1, Aug 31 12:40 (EDT):
Hi there, I bought your Star Trek Desktop skin and it was supposed to alter a lot of things from the advertisement including windows and such, all it altered were the desktop icons, and the wallpaper. There are no sound effects, no different windows, I was curious if this was an issue or if in fact I was ripped off. Thank you so much for your time!

What follows is an unedited transcript of a conversation between a Skins Factory Customer and Jeff Schader Chief Executive Officer of The Skins Factory inc.
CUSTOMER
Having admired the skins factories work for a while I chose to purchase and download a Hyperdesk Theme. While installing the skin my AVG package identified a medium MALWARE threat that was quarantined C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER\MSIEFDF.TMP. Finishing the installation the hyperdesk would not "load selected features" I have removed and reinstalled Hyperdesk and it still shows the same errors and will not load selected features or restore windows can you please advise. Many thanks
JEFF
It's a false positive. We see it occasionally with Norton too. The only thing Hyperdesk does is check back with our server to see if there is an update. The installers haven't been updated in over a year, some even longer. Try turning off the virus while running the installer or if possible excluding Hyperdesk. Not sure how AVG works. Given the amount of themes people have purchased and how many run virus programs, it's nothing to worry about.
You can try downloading it again:
CUSTOMER
Hi Jeff
Thanks for the reply, I turned off all security software n re-downloaded the file selecting "repair" this enabled the media player skin and changed half the visible icons. I uninstalled the program restarted the computer re-installed from new with the same effect, the background, windows, most of the icons remained Windows 7 standard. You advertising shows Windows 7 compatible then u add that there may be issues on windows 7 and now I find that your skins do not work on Windows 7.
Our software does work on Windows 7. I never stated there were problems with our software on Windows 7.
My apologies you did not state personally that there were issues with Windows 7 but part way through the payment and download process a disclaimer is displayed stating that there are some issues with Windows 7 and that users should visit a specified page for support. Having tried repairing a failed install caused by my Virus Software and then removing and re-installing the windows skin my purchased product has replaced a couple of the visible icons and the media player skin, the background, windows edges, fonts, majority of icons have remained windows standard. I do not wish to upset you or cause you to become defensive over your product I only want for the purchased skin and overlay to work. I have previously used the alienguise skins on XP machines and was very much looking forward to using a true skins factory product. I am disabled and confined to a wheelchair my PC is my portal to friends and much of my shopping and entertainment, the appearance of my OS and my computers overall functionality is pretty important to me.
I would very much appreciate your assistance in getting the skin to install or instructions for manually the components
JEFF
You install the skin by clicking the installer. That's about it. We can't control how another application works with ours, in this case an anti-virus program. I have no idea what AVG did/does to our theme installer. So I'm not sure how to help you to otherwise say find out if you can exclude the application, download the theme and then try again.
CUSTOMER
If you had read my email you would know that the last attempt to install your software was done with no other programs running. I have tried to install Hyperdesk several times using both the links you sent. With the same result a part install that does not work. Reviewing your help links on your site it seems that the same answer is offered “err well shucks if it err don’t work then err golly I just don’t know or care”. Thanks for not helping thanks for the informative and comprehensive help and assistance it’s real appreciated.
JEFF
I'll be happy to refund your money. And shove your threats up your fucking ass.
CUSTOMER
WTF u got defensive over your product from misreading my mails, you offered repetitive flawed advice again from not having read my mails and now you responding to threats...WHAT THREATS, read your our messages I have only asked for your assistance in getting your Hyperdesk suite to work on a Windows x64 bit system. It obviously doesn’t.

"unedited transcript"? Really? Funny how you left the entire exchange off where you said and I quote:

"If you had read my email you would know that the last attempt to install your software was done with no other programs running. I have tried to install Hyperdesk several times using both the links you sent. With the same result a part install that does not work. Reviewing your help links on your site it seems that the same limp answere is offered errr well shucks if it er dont work then er golly I just dont know or care. Thanks for not helping thanks for the informative and comprehensive help and assistance its real appreciated. What will I be doing this week well I think i'd better spend my time POSTING YOUR ABSOLUTELY GROUND BREAKING ASSISTANCE THIS NEW ZEN ATTEMPT AT CUSTOMER SERVICE IS FRAKIN AWESOME MAN I MEAN LIKE WOW MAN DOWNLOAD AND TRY AGAIN YEAH LIKE I HAVEN'T ALREADY DONE THAT SEVERAL TIMES YOU DUMB ASS IGNORANT SON OF A BITCH HYPERSPACE SUCKS AND I WONDER WHY ER THAT COULD BE COULD IT BE THAT J SHADER IS THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER BECAUSE AT THE SKINS FACTORY CUSTOMER SERVICE IS ALL ABOUT NOT FUCKING KNOWING NOT FUCKING CARING AND SELLING PRODUCTS THAT DONT WORK ON THE INTENDED OPERATING SYSTEM. Please don't reply with some limp gay challenge to my profanity and accusations I don't give a moneky's and I'll be to busy bloggin the 2500+ gamers in my clan hey and frack it everyone on xbox live and facebook and twitter sheesh i'm gonna be so busy I wont have time to notice the sore ass caused by the shafting provided by J Shader at the skins factory"

That was the response to me saying:

"You install the skin by clicking the installer. That's about it. We can't control how another application works with ours, in this case an anti-virus program. I have no idea what AVG did/does to our theme installer. So I'm not sure how to help you to otherwise say find out if you can exclude the application, redownload the theme and then try again."

Your damn right I told you to shove your threat up your f**king ass. You think because you buy a piece of software from us that gives you the right to threaten and insult me? The reason we tell people to redownload the themes is because it's a possibility that something could get corrupted during the download. I also thoughy that since your anti-virus was messing with things that it might be better to try and redownload everything. Your money was refunded.

That's the kind of customer service you get when you act like an asshole. Writing tech support and asking us if we "ripped you off" is a prick thing to say. Which is why i refunded your money and sent you on your way. I could easily counter this comment with tons of emails from satisfied customers who i helped with tech support that didn't insult us from the get-go. Prick.

If TSF wants to beat Stardock it's pretty easy: just produce some well-written USER DOCUMENTATION and Help; they'll be completely unbeatable!! (I know that 'cause I'm an Object Desktop subscriber...)

Great (unbiased) review! :D

Just to make things clear, will the window frames be done with bitmap images, or could something like targa, or png be used (like Windowblinds)

it is a curious thing. that those closely affiliated with stardock seem unable to refrain from passing critical comment, implied or otherwise, on something that by their own admission they know little about.

perhaps assertions of insecurity are not so unfounded afterall.
