Okay, since it has been awhile since the last time that I posted a review - three weeks at this time - I thought that I'd reveal the next reviewer. It's coming up soon. If you're wondering if it's the big secret thing I was planning; no, that kind of fell through. It sucks, but sometimes that happens. Ideas don't always pan out. There's not much you can do about that. When you've got a ton of ideas. Not all of them are going to work out. I don't want to spoil exactly what that was, as I might be able to refine that idea later on.

So... the next animated atrocities review will be...

Fame and Misfortune... yes, that one from Friendship is Magic season seven.

Like Legend of Korra, this is another thing that I debated long and hard about wanting to review. Even ignoring that it's a little awkward going back to Friendship is Magic with a negative review after so long, I understand that this is another episode that's... a little controversial within the community. As in, a lot of people really like it and a lot of people really don't. I'm on the side that doesn't like the episode, obviously.

I wanted to start the year off... simple, but I don't think that I'm going to be able to get that. Ignoring the subject matter; this review ended up... longer than I was expecting. It's one of them "longer than the episode itself" reviews, and it's a 22 minute episode, so...

Now, I do want to explain my thought process about why I'm reviewing this episode in particular, but I don't want to be... redundant. I mean, it's not "teh wurst episode evar"; it's not my least favorite episode of the show; or even my least favorite since I stopped reviewing Friendship is Magic. It's one of those episodes where... I think that the type of flaws within the episode make a better review over the amount of flaws.

And to nip something in the bud right away, I don't talk about Starlight (except for her context within the episode). I'm fairly ambivalent towards her as a character; as in I don't think that I've seen enough of her episodes for me to really get a feel for her overall character. I have seen a few episodes with her. I liked The Cutie Map; I didn't like The Cutie Re-Mark for not-Starlight reasons, etc. So if you're worried about that, don't be.

Well. This should be interesting.

Really? You forget huh? Ellen you were always the one talking shit behind people's back and whinning about them and i honestly dont believe that you changed. That was a reason you lost all friends but you just dont see your fault in anything. You blame everyone else for that and the true is that you got what you deserve. Also you cant say that you dont check peoples pages too so cut the crap.
I dont want you to start a drama again like you did last time so please grow up and stop complaining, becouse bringing up the same thing again wont help. Good luck with your new ekhm friends as you say. i hope you'll finally start thinking.

I like to see what your thoughts of Littlest Pet Shop, as there is an episode where we see a Derpy version of a bird and Zoe is a snobbish version of Twilight Sparkle in dog form.

As a Starlight fan, this is worrying. If you're not going to talk about her, you're probably not going to talk about the ACTUAL flaws of the episode - like the fact that she could've been replaced with Spike and the episode would have been exactly the same. I'm worried that you might focus on the "calling out your critics" aspect of the episode... Because that aspect doesn't really exist. Yeah, there are a few jabs at the most well known criticisms, but in the end, the message is that if you can reach anybody in a positive way, it's all worth it.I totally agree the episode isn't amazing, especially by this season's standard, but it's nowhere near atrocity worthy. It's got a solid plot, it was enjoyable to watch, and I personally loved the song. I could certainly see if the criticism were toward the moral, but I still wouldn't call it "atrocious".

Yeah, it was my least favourite episode (beside Princess Spike and Applejack day Off) because of how dettached it felt from overall series. It broke so many statuses (like Rarity's business and Daring Do identity) that it really felt "non-canon"
It's like that episode from Teen Titans Go where writers make parody of the older serious Teen Titans in order to make fun of its fans, however it felt really out of plaace in MLP since it susualyl never break 4th wall for critcism toward fanbase.

I thought Hasbro always said that the show is aimed at little girls and bronies are just an "add-on" so why are they constantly making episodes for bronies, like "Stranger than fan fiction", "Flutter Brutter" and especially anti-fandom like "Fame and Misfotrune"? Even MA Larson hated that episode and didn't want to talk about it.

It's been 3 years and 8 months since your last review of MLP in general.
It's been 1 year and 2 months since your last review of anything pony related.
All I have say is... this MLP review better be worth watching.

Would you consider doing a review of Perfect Pear?

What's the point? It's a great episode that literally everyone likes. There's nothing that can be added to the conversation there.

It would fit nicely in "admirable animation" though

I've seen all of the Starlight episodes and I'm still ambivalent about her.

but. if it's not worse than putting your hoof down, it can barely count as an atrocity
Fermin-Tenava Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018  Hobbyist General Artist
I'm afraid I have to skip this one, too. I don't want to watch this episode any longer as an allegory on the brony community, but as a lesson about the public, celebrity and fan cult, and I'm afraid I'm pretty alone on this one, since everyone treats it as an attack on the oh-so-helpless public. Critic is not supposed to be a one-way street from the outside towards the creator.
TheOmegas2 Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018
Oddly enough, I had a feeling this would be an MLP review. But I thought I'd be the movie.
Looking forward to it, as always.

I actually really enjoyed Fame and Misfortune and is one of my favorite episodes. If I had one complaint about it, it's the fact that Spike wasn't in the episode at all even though 1. He's a main character and 2. He wrote in the friendship journal too!
BaffleBlend Featured By Owner Edited Jan 22, 2018  Hobbyist Digital Artist
...yeah. I think I'm going to skip this one. Still too many bad memories associated with that show for me to feel comfortable watching a review of it.
SammorethHaystalk Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018
To put Fame and Misfortune into one sentence...
"The complainer is always wrong (except when they're not), be three years late to the punch, and the Fanboy is always obnoxious."
Scrape-Katastr0ph3 Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018
Yeah, I'm also in the camp that doesn't like this episode. In fact, Season 7 is by far my least favourite MLP season. And I had many issues with Season 2 (yes, THAT season)

I am don't part of the MLP fandom, but can I ask what the seasonal-wide ratings are and how much the quality of much season is discussed in the fandom?

"I don't think that I've seen enough of her episodes"

So, does that mean you haven't been making the effort to watch every episode? Does that mean you don't care for the show like you used to?

I’m honestly happy to été another review of MLP by you.
Since that’s what got me to be a subscriber in the first place.😊
Funtime1997 Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018
I kind of like this episode, most likely if look past it, M.A Larson created a metaphor to the Brony community.  If you do not like that is fine.  To me the episode is an eight out of ten
lunchymunchies Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018
I don't know about you, but it came off to me as having the message that if you complain about the writing of the show, you're an asshole. Unfortunately, there are some writers who think like that, that the reason you don't like what they write is because you're bad people, and they can't stand criticism or people disliking what they make.
Funtime1997 Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018
I can see your point I mean we had the Teen Titans Go attack the critics episodes.  Now those episodes I do not like
SofiaBlythe2014 Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018
I wouldn't call myself bugged by the episode since I knew that somethings like this would happen. Considering the show is given the preschool rating of TV-Y, it could've been a lot worse and more mean spirited if this episode had the rating for older kids (like TV-Y7 or PG), which could've potentially left a more bitter taste.
lunchymunchies Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018
I usually dislike when shows make episodes addressing the critics because the message is usually "if you complain about the writing, you're an asshole".
ZuTheSkunk Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2018

While we're on the subject of upcoming reviews, what's the status on the review of the Atlantis II and the re-reviews of 12 oz. Mouse and Stuck In The Wringer?

Yet to start season 7 myself, though only episode I kept watching on repeats (as in streaming on Netflix) is A Royal Problem. I think a couple of people over on the ResetERA community thread detest the episode as well, from what I read there.

I thought the episode was a mixbag, so whatever you say, I can't be too offended. :)

jpbelow Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2018  Hobbyist General Artist
All I can think to bring up at this time is my disliking of an episode (from this very show) that only by talking to others and listening to what they had to say, did I undrstand the context of it more.

You know, for a long time, "Flutter Brutter" was an episode that I didn't like and couldn't understand why others did (or rather Zephyr Breeze). I didn't see why so many people tolerated not only him being a moocher, but also being self-absorbant, sabotaging every opportunity he had to show his worth, and get let off the hook so quickly and easily. It struck an especially harsh nerve with me because I went to school with many obnoxious students who tried that route, and it did NOT work out for them so easily.

Then I heard points brought up on Zephyr's fear of failure, and how easily it can break anyone down. How he was afraid to risk falling like Fluttershy did in "Hurricane Fluttershy"-except Fluttershy had friends to support her, and it still didn't overcome her fear. Zephyr wasn't shown to have friends, so it's been pointed out to me that his self-absorbant facade is a mask for his fear.

Probably just an irrelivant comment in the grand scheme of things. It just felt good for me to write it.

Glad to see someone with professional standards can see what a disgrace that episode is. Tempted to watch it, but I fear seeing anything from it. Might also be a good opportunity to finally voice you're more matured views on the show since you've been avoiding it since Season 4.

Looking forward on your full thoughts on the episode, especially the song “Flawless”.

Are there any of these types of episodes done right?

I know Ratatouille is a famous example, but surely it can't be the only one... I also liked the Drawn Together episode Xandir and Tim Sitting in a Tree, but I have a feeling people are gonna disagree with me on that one.

Surely there's gotta be other good examples...

"Stranger than FanFiction". From THIS VERY SHOW!
darkqiviut Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2018
Not just STFF. Once Upon a Zeppelin, which aired later in Season 7, poked fun at unsavory fandom actions while not painting either side as fully the bad guy, and it's twenty times cleverer than F&M.
Eh....wasn't a fan of Once Upon a Zeppelin. Found it to be VERY boring. Especially since Fame and Misfortune came out earlier and that was more entertaining.
