In the 1940s, the PRR chose to try and make a 4-6-4 better than the P6. What was done was they added poppet valve gear, a longer boiler, and a tender along the lines of the T1 4-4-4-4 duplex.

It was a moderate success, but only about four were built due to the lack of interest in the new engine.
