There's actually been much scientific debate on this topic. Some argue that higher cortical processors are necessary for this illusion to work, while others believe that it is due to the automatic micro-adjustments that our eyes are constantly making, while still others say that asymetry in luminance profiles are responsible. Still others aren't happy with just one of these answers, and insist that illusions like this exist because of a combination of any two, and/or all three! Me? I just think they're fun to look at! (...Yeah, sorry for flooding you with almost-gibberish in response to a question asked over three years ago!)
