The Merry Trio by MountainLygon The Merry Trio by MountainLygon
Have some Liberty's Kids fan art. This was drawn before I realized Laurens did in fact appear in LK, albeit not alongside either of his best friends.

From left to right, we have the most popular historical character on the show, Major General Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette; Lieutenant Colonel John "Jack" Laurens; and Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Hamilton. The latter two served as Washington's aides-de-camp, and Hamilton was chief of staff.

In my opinion, the friendship between these three, all integral members of Washington's staff, was a sorely missed opportunity in LK. Particularly Laurens. Remember General "Poodles" Lee? Yeah, Laurens shot him in a duel a few months after the Battle of Monmouth. On Christmas Eve, to be precise. Not fatally, but enough to make things interesting for a young journalist like James Hiller, which is why it's a pity he didn't cover that event. It could have been a good historical lesson on dueling, especially since Hamilton, who served as Laurens' second in the duel, would go on to be fatally shot himself in a duel against Vice President Aaron Burr. But I guess the show creators figured ominous foreshadowing for an event that we would never see on screen was too deep for this show. They left it to Lin Manuel Miranda to foreshadow events 24 years down the road.

As for the friendship between these three, that developed as they worked closely together for Washington. They all had one thing in common: No dad in their lives (except Washington). Laurens' father was Henry Laurens, who presided over the Continental Congress for a year. But Jack and Henry had a stormy relationship at best. Jack was Henry's firstborn, set to inherit the Laurens family fortune, which included dozens of slaves. But Jack was a staunch, outspoken abolitionist. They could not see eye to eye on the subject. Jack's poor relationship with his father probably helped him bond with Hamilton, whose own father had abandoned him when he was ten years old. Lafayette, the youngest member of the trio, was an orphan like Hamilton, but his father had died a war hero, which is probably part of the reason he looked up to Washington as a surrogate father. Lafayette connected first with Hamilton, who was fluent in French. Lafayette actually knew very little English when he first arrived in America. Hamilton had to teach him. The two became fast friends, and Lafayette also bonded with Laurens over their shared stance on slavery (Hamilton was not as much of an abolitionist as Miranda portrays him; he very much supported his friends' vision, but his own focus was elsewhere). Laurens' brother noted the friendship between the three, describing them as the "gay trio." Had their "team name" been mentioned in the show, it probably would have been modified to avoid confusion among kids, as to the younger generation, "gay" no longer means "merry."

Each of these three have had their designs modified some from their original appearance:

Lafayette - actually had dark hair, but as he typically wore a wig, he is depicted on the show as having that weird gray hair and eyebrows to match. I doubt they powdered their eyebrows. So Laf's gray eyebrows had to go, replaced by dark brown to denote his natural hair color. The pink sash is something often included in depictions of Lafayette, and as a sash around the waist was considered stylish for officers (as well as a means of adding a bit of personal flair to a uniform), I decided to include it here. Honestly, I can see pink being Laf's favorite color. He has the personality for it. Think Aang or Pinkie Pie, but with just a hint of revenge-driven bloodlust (just the tiniest hint, though; do NOT go writing parodies of Cupcakes with Pinkamena Lafayette).

Laurens - looks quite a bit different in the show. As I said, I did not realize when I drew this that Laurens had indeed appeared in LK. We meet him in France, where he has been sent by Washington to try to get King Louis to cough up the aid he'd promised to Lafayette only months before. Laurens is only in two scenes in the whole show, but we get a decent sampling of his fiery, outspoken attitude that was not unlike Hamilton's. My design for Laurens is a more Disney-esque style that's based partially on a portrait, and partially on LK's design for his father Henry. He's seen here raising his third pint of Sam Adams to freedom.

Hamilton - ginger or auburn? There is some disagreement regarding Hamilton's hair color. It is described as being anywhere from strawberry blond to dark auburn. But one thing all the descriptions have in common is that it is red, not that dirty blond that they gave him (and Jefferson, also a redhead) in the show. I used the yellow from the show for most of his hair, but gave him red highlights, hopefully giving the illusion that he has strawberry blond hair. Hamilton is also depicted in the show as having aqua eyes, when in fact he had violet eyes. Yes, that's right, violet. His eyes were a very pale blue that became translucent in the right light, which I've tried to capture here. Notice that he's also the only member of the trio who doesn't have an arm slung around one of his buddies. Introversion aside, Hamilton was never the type to trust easily (you can thank his disappeared dad for that). Even among friends, he might appear to be more standoffish. He believed in making a name for himself instead of being just another part of a group, relying on someone else's name to gain notoriety. Yeah, he was arguably the most narcissistic of the trio. Yet they loved him anyway.

A sad fact: Lafayette outlived Hamilton by 30 years and Laurens by 52 years. He was the only one of the three to die at old age of natural causes. This despite surviving two wars and five years in prison.

Amazing. I know why Hammie powdered his hair in some occacsions is because he has dirty blonde hair, though we may never know which color he has, though some say auburn or ginger, but I'm assuming reddish blonde

What's the pink in Lafayette?

Washington's subordinate generals wore pink sashes either across their chest or around their waist. Besides, Laf strikes me as the type of guy who would like pink.

AWESOME fan art!

Though thank you for making this, since I'm one of the guys who edits the Liberty's Kids wiki, I would've forgotten to add John Laurens because of overlooking him (and it was a long time since I last watch Liberty's Kids, I'd remember Lafayette and Hamilton, those two aren't hard for me to forget).

this is so awesome. i really love the whole summary of their stories and the explanation of what bonds them together. i really can't wait to see more of your LK art.

But if i could critique just one thing... Lauren's eyes seem off, like they don't match each other. one looks bigger than the other and the left eye looks more far off to the side then it should be. other then that this is still awesome.

Ah, you noticed that. Getting my characters' eyes to look uniform is a recurring struggle for me. And I rarely try to correct it, because I have a tendency to just make it worse when I do. The best I can do is try again next time.

Thanks for the comment and critique. Where I go from here regarding LK fan art, I haven't decided. But Hamilton being the brony that he is, there may be a pony version of this trio in the future.
