Sunset-Moonrise (v.2.1)

By Mordasius
142 Favourites
This rainmeter skin shows the position of the sun and moon based on the time, date and where you are on planet Earth. The sun and moon images are hauled up chains to their highest points above the horizon from whence they fall to sunset or moonset. You will need the latest beta version of Rainmeter to run the skin. Get it from here

Hover your mouse pointer over the sun/moon images for info on the rise and set times. Hover over the cycle wheel at the top to see the twilight hours and plan your sky-watching and/or artistic activities accordingly.

You can toggle the exhaust fireball images on and off by clicking on the rotating cog in the bottom-left.

You will need to enter your latitude, longitude and timezone for the whole thing to work properly. Do this by left-clicking on the cycle wheel at the top and following instructions in the file.

UPDATE: 18 Jan 2013 - added a clock which you can toggle on/off by clicking on the panel which shows 'Twilight' in the above screenshot.
UPDATE: 31 Mar 2013 - corrected the problem with daylight savings times.

It's TERRIFIC. However, it's showing sunrise 2:54 AM and sunset 2:23 PM here in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Moon times are also screwy. If you can suggest how to fix this, I'd so much appreciate it. Most excellent work, sir, but better if the times are right. THANK YOU!

Glad to hear you sorted it out......

Ok, got it. Click on the spoked wheel at top, change lat/long and time zone to the right values. I thought these were autodetected because the lat/long was right, but the time zone wasn't. (7 instead of 3). Thanks.

Have you ever given thought to doing this in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky theme? It would look amazing

Odd that you should make this suggestion now as I am currently playing through Call Of Chernobyl with the DoctorX Questlines.   I might get around to a STALKERised version of this skin after I've blasted a few more mutants and found a few more stashes.

That would be too awesome.

Will this still work on the latest v. of rainmeter? I'm on Windows 8.1
Mordasius's avatar
I'm sure it will work with the latest version of Rainmeter because the new releases are always fully compatible with previous versions.   I'm still quite content with Windows 7 but the skin should be okay with Windows 8.1.

I may not ever really pay attention to what info it's actually giving me, & I don't need it, but I love knowing it's there & seeing it out of the corner of my eye, on my second monitor. It's such a fancy & artistic skin, it's a real pleasure to see every day. :)

How to get moonset and moonrise from :D
Mordasius's avatar
Sorry you can't get moonset and moonrise from  This, along with my other skins, uses a Lua script to calculate the moon rise and moonset times for a given location.

Thank you! That's sad :'(

Love the skin!  However there is a problem.  When I hover over the sun, it lists the sunset and sunrise on the wrong times (I.E. sunset: 7:32 am, sunrise : 5:40 am) subsequently the sun rises in the evening.  Is there something I have done wrong?  I have the right lat and long placed in the variables file.

Do be sure to set your time zone as well as the latitude and longitude.  The time zone is the offset from GMT/UTC  which is a number between -12 and 14  (no need to put the '+' for positive numbers). :-)

Thanks!  I double checked my time zone and it was wrong.

I cant get it to work properly. No matter how many times I update my lat and long, it never shows the correct sun and moon times or positions.
Mordasius's avatar
Not quite sure why that would be. Could you send me a Note (yellow Note icon - top-right of the page) giving your location (city/town) along with the latitude, longitude and time zone you are using on the skin.
