KeepsakesI stumbled on a memory today
stubbed my toe on it's corner
jutting jagged into my mind
it's strange the things we forget to find
those dusty mementos
moments lost in time
flashes of light in dark dimensions
did I mention
I thought of you today
a fleeting thing but I smiled anyways
peeking through old doorways
painted golden through time's haze
smoothed over by too many yesterdays
like river rock the edge has worn off
eroded by the tick tock of bygone years
they don't cut like they used to
those mental keepsakes of you
The Wolf Came SecondYou think it was the wolf that took her down.
Her hood wasn't always red, you know.
It wasn't the wolf.
He came across the massacre
and knew easy prey when he saw it.
She was already kneeling on the ground
her scarred arms
clutched over the back of her neck.
She'd listen to any kind voice by then—
anyone that wasn't screeching at her.
A question about where she was going,
what she was doing—
it must have seemed like someone cared.
And he kept the others at bay.
A powerful protector.
No wonder she was glad enough to answer him,
if only to keep him there a moment longer,
as she glanced at the trees,
dreading the flash of black—
the clack of the beaks,
the shiny eyes
There is more than one kind of bully
in the deep dark woods.
She was eaten alive twice.
raina rooftop heartbeat
coursing from a cosmic vein
pitter pats and petrichor
proving we're alive
heavens blood on your lashes
vital puckers to your flesh
syncopated arrangements on leaves
a deluge of murmurs
tickle the dirt
Krasiswe are but remnants
of warmth, imprints
to our footpaths,
our blooming forgotten
in the face of a blue moon,
autumnal harvest wreckage,
