So I have made quite a few of these little charms, but this is the first time that I have made one for myself! I wanted to make something as a reminder of my beautiful, beloved dumbo rat Domino, and finding one of these sweet little donut charms gave me the idea to make a keychain of her.

I love you, Domino!

(And before any pet care spider experts chastise me for allowing her to eat a high sugar food... she was already in palliative care when that photo was taken; as far as I am concerned, when you are dying, if you want to eat your weigh in donut, you can have the damn donut!)

Medium: Coloured pencil on shrinky dink paper with fixative.
(Google "shrinky dink" if you don't know what it is; it's a pretty cool craft item!)

What a cutie, Domino!
You eat that donut : )

I'm glad that you liked her! I do miss keeping rats as pets. They are the sweetest, friendliest animals. I just couldn't handle their short lifespans anymore. They just don't live long enough.

I know I know :,( It's heartbreaking. I guess I just can't resist their little whiskery faces, and I don't think about what getting a baby pup means in the end.

this is beautifull and a bit heartbreaking... would you take comissions? my two pet rats are healthy, but they are already 2 and a half years old, and i'd love to have something like this when they pass...

Rats can eat donuts? Isn't that highly poisonous towards them?

Like all foods very high in sugar, too much can be very bad for rats. Too much sugar is bad for rats in the same way that it is bad for humans: it can cause liver problems, insulin resistance, and hormone fluctuations. A little bite every once in a while is not going to hurt them, though. It's not really "poisonous," just bad for them in large amounts. I mention in the artist comments that Domino was in palliative care at the time that this photo was taken. She had an inoperable pituitary tumour that was never going to get better. So I gace her any food that she wanted, whether it was good for her or not, because she was already dying (and just on steroids and painkillers to make her more comfortable). I would never recommend giving an entire donut to a healthy rat, but a tiny bite wouldn't hurt. :)

Your welcome! I guess my instinct just kicked in. I'm going to be a vet soon.

Oh, good luck in your studies! I worked in a veterinary clinic for a while. It is very tough work, but also very rewarding. :)

Aw, Domino was a cute rat. I'm sorry she had to pass... :(

Also, I've always wanted a rat... Are they good pets..?

Rats make really great pets! They are friendly, intelligent, and affectionate. My rats all have different personalities, and never fail to make laugh when they're acting silly. The only downsides are that their lifespans are so short, and it can cost a lot if you have to take them to the vet (they are prone to getting tumours and respiratory infections, sadly). I wouldn't trade my ratties for the world, though! :)

They sound great! I'll have to get me a rat sometime. ^^

I may commission you for one of these soon. I just recently had to let go of my albino rat Odin. He started losing weight and breathing hard, and he was very tired. Only 1year and half old. He had chronic kidney failure. this happened about a week ago and his health declined so fast. and since he was already in decline I let him have as many of his yogurt drop treats as he wanted. Milk and honey yogurt drops were his favorite. even let him have a bit of dark chocolate.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear about your little friend Odin. :( I'm glad to hear that his last days were full of things that he loved, though (much like my Domino's). He must have really enjoyed having honey yogurt drops with his best friend! And dark chocolate is actually a good idea when rats aren't feeling well, as it relieves some of the symptoms of respiratory infections. I'm sure that helped him as well as being a delicious treat. I hope you'll feel better soon and be able to remember all of the wonderful times that you had. I still miss my Domino very much, but I'm so grateful that she was a part of my life.

This is adorable! =) I'd love to have a rat someday. Making my researches first! They seem like very sweet and fun little companions. The only thing I find really sad is that they have such a short lifespan  :(

I have seven rats at the moment, and I love them very much! They are intelligent, affectionate, and very sensitive little creatures. Really, yes, the only downside is their lifespan. They just don't live long enough compared to how much you will grow to care about them. And it's great that you are doing your research on them first. There's a lot of great information out there nowadays about keeping your rats healthy and happy. Best of luck if you ever do decide to get a few! :)
