The Storm bringer clan

Overview

The Stormbringers are a clan that dates back to time of raids after the gods' war. Though the clans are united now, the Storm bringers still carry their name in pride and the family is patriarchal in structure. A unicorn by the name of Alderic is the current patriarch and his son Thedus next in line. They are very traditional in their views, which has helped them transition more easily into life under a warlord.

As a clan they were a family based unit concentrating on managing and defending resources rather than striking out to obtain them. They were known for their skills in terms of building up food reserves. As their name might suggest horses in the clan were known to posses weather-based blessings thorough history.

History

Like most clans in Onea, the Stormbringers were founded after the gods' great war. With many casualties having fallen during the fighting, survivors sometimes found themselves alone or with very few family members left. As family groups settled back into life in Onea, raiding each other for food and resources, minority groups found themselves barely able to survive. Out of desperation some of them found themselves banding together, driven towards less favourable pieces of land. With eye on survival they united, forming  the very base of the Stormbringers.

The Stormbringer way of life was simple. Protect what is yours and keep each other alive. The horses had had enough of being driven away and claiming the piece of land they found themselves on, set to defend it. Adaptability soon became a well-favored trait, learning to deal with less favourable circumstances and turns in life quickly. They mastered the art of growing crops and herding animals for wool, leather and milk. Where the earth left them off, they turned to the sea for there Kaia also had blessed them with her creations. They also developed an eye for weather as living in tune with nature allowed them more plentiful resources. As they built up reserves, trade in food became their way of bartering with other clans, so gaining in status and influence, allowing them to survive through the ages.

When Garok set out to conquer the clans and unite War-forged, the Stormbringer resisted initially, growing defensive in wanting to protect hearth and home. As it was a battle that would clearly be lost however, patriarch Alderic cut his losses, submitting under the warlords' rule by presenting himself as ally instead. In current days the clan has officially ceased to exist, but still works as a family structure with Alderic at the head. He sees to it that the family gets what it needs and keeps his hoof inside the games of politics.

Clan Lore

Nature & Weather

The Stormbringers have survived this long due their attunement to nature and their willingness to change with it's pace. They have learned to be patient and to let nature run it's course. Wisdom has been passed over the years of which crops should be planted when and which animals should be bred at which times for optimal results. To try defy nature is seen as an insult towards the gods as they were the one's who created it's laws. To attune to it is an ability well praised. There is a history of agriculturists, familiar whisperers and naturists in the family, not only benefiting the raising of crops/life stock, but also defending it from diseases and carnivores.

Another aspect of nature of which knowledge has passed down through the ages are weather pattern. Also tide master talent is found commonly in the clan, the knowledge ever valuable for protecting their resources and their own lives. Unlike these days in which weather witches provide predictions for the herd as a whole, the talent was used by mare and stallion alike. The family still tends to prefer their own predictions over those of weather witches and even make it that there's always at least one reliable source up there (so one of their own). Comments about the weather and gauging it happens on a daily basis with them and thus a very important part of daily life.

As they value living in harmony with nature, they consider it blasphemy to try and force nature to bend to your own will. Blessings are used with caution and respect, horses taught to not push into the boundaries of the divine. Things such as ageing potions or hair potions, that temper with the natural development of things are near forbidden, only to be used in case of emergency and even then looked down upon. The earth takes it's time and clan members were excepted to live in accordance to the earth's patience.

Family

Once a clan, now a family under the same name, the Stormbringers are still known for being close-knit. Family is family and it is expected that you take care of your own before anyone else. Their idea of family does not relate to blood-ties, but to kinship. To fail your family is to fail yourself, to fail yourself is to fail your family. Where the need of the many outweighs the need of the one, the Storm Bringer clan has a tradition of casting out horses long before the clans were united The family structure is patriarchal with one stallion at the top controlling it all and varies degrees of control for the males below. A maffia family would be somewhat of a comparison if you leave off the shady stuff. Nowadays however Alderic is slowly loosing his influence on the outer edges of the family, much to his dislike.

Occupations

In short:
- The clan is farming based
- females do lighter shores and stay home
- males have more varied jobs

The Stormbringers traditionally are farmers and herders at heart. Woman were often given lighter shores to do, but worked fields alongside their men or kept tended to animals closer to home. Men had a more varied trajectory in life usually taking up guarding the clan at younger age after which most would retire once ready to settle down with their own family and take up farming and herding. Few males choose to stay as guardsmen indefinitely training batch after batch of younger stallions until they retired. Other odd jobs such as merchants selling and distributing wares or brewing beer were possible but few and far in between. Elder and widowed mares were often know to teach children and acts as healers. If a stallion was unfortunate enough to loose all his wives and children or was incapable of achieving them, he became a prime healer, holding word over healer mares. Elder stallion often formed council for the clanleader. Only one mare was allowed the position of full time observing the weather. She was the clan leader's most loved wife and known as the Stormkeeper. She acted as a voice of calm and reason, offering advice on the subject of weather. Though technically not recognized as a position of power, a Stormkeeper was well praised amongst her clan and sought out for council. She also often held great behind the scenes influence over her husband.  Aside from forewarning changes in weather and advising on things in relation with season changes she also often acted like a mediator for clan disputes.

The clan grew and still grows a wide variety of food and keeps a variety of livestock under which pigs, ducks, chickens, sheep, goats , apana, llama and Apana. These fields and herds are however relatively small. More notable are the highland cows they drive. Robust and devoted males will drive the cows for long periods of times, leaving wives at home waiting for their return. It is considered a hard but honorable job and the leather alongside the milk makes for good produce. Cow drivers often sing songs while on their way. It is considered an all men's job, too rough for mares. Nowadays many of their jobs still stand, though with uniting the herd, it's dynamics have shifted.

Another typical and well practised male job is that of the sea farmers. Where the earth left them wanting, the old members of the clan were driven to the sea to survive and actually the larger portion of their farming consists of this. They have a long tradition of keeping up ships, though unlike the rest of warforged this was and is still not meant for battle, rather farming whatever it is that the sea has them to give. These boats are male only as mares are considered bad luck to have on a ship. Just like those that drive the highland cattle, the sea farmers leave their wives to tend to heart and home. As comes with boats, the clan knows how to keep their boats fit and boat repairing is a well respected craft for those who choose to stray from farming.

The Stormcaller & the Stormkeeper

Stormcaller is the tittle given to the current head of the clan. The term originated with first Stormcaller Einar called lightening down from the sky to defend his clan from enemies. It was due to his swift actions the clan was kept safe. Clanleaders have been known to posses weather based blessing such as electricity manipulation, air manipulation, frost manipulation and water manipulation over the ages alongside others in the clan. Stormkeeper is the tittle given to the clan leader's most loved wife. She is the one who's considered able to 'calm the storm'. A phrase sometime whispered because of this is 'she's his stormkeeper' meaning a mare a stallion truly loves.

Gender roles, fertility & marriage

As seen earlier, gender roles are very outspoken in the clan. Because of the belief that pretending to be another gender than what you have been given at birth is unnatural, a
ny none cisgenders are looked down upon. Despite the less than favorable view, they are put up with if they can do their job. The only exception would be if you're discovered as a female on a ship. Having a mare, of sex so regardless of gender identity) on board is seen as bad luck. They would need to hide very well or risk being dropped overboard as punishment.

Fertility is a big thing for the Storm bringer clan and the ability to produce healthy offspring is well priced. If a mare cannot bear children or if the child is sickly in some way, a stallion holds the right to cast her aside as wife. In the first instance, it's always the mare who carries blame. Does the stallion however fail with more than one wife, families are allowed to call of a marriage deal and barter their daughter to another. Horses of infertility, low fertility or bad fertility are considered lower status. In the same lieu same sex couples are looked down upon. They would be pressured to adopt rather than use -to the clan- unnatural means to conceive.

Bartering is very commo within the clan and females are next to always bartered. Matches are often approved by the clan leader, but an elder mare, known as a matchmaker is often sought for advice on good matches. Males are given some leniency in picking their own wives, but if they take too long they will be bartered as well.

Despite expectations for mares, they are invaluable to the clan and seen as just as important a part of a family as stallions are. They are treated with respect and by no means as property, but are expected to stay in their role just as a stallion stays in theirs. Mares are also often seen as something beautiful and fragile, something to protect. Those in direct line of first clan leader Einar have always had the tradition to name their female children after delicate things, more often than not flowers. Many outside the direct lineage have adopted this tradition. Mothers have the right to naming their daughters and fathers the right to naming their sons. Even so stallions tend to ask their wife's opinion out of respect and to promote harmony within the family.

Ignacio and the three godesses

Unity of a family is absolute to the Storm bringer clan and it's one tale that's been passed down from generation to generation that thought their clan this truth. After the gods' war, years passed and over those years the exact happenings of that war became somewhat vague. As the clan had good experience with Ignacio's gifts, they came up with their own explanation of what hzd transpired. According to Storm bringer lore the whole war was a family dispute, aligning their own family structures with the gods. Ignacio and Argus were brothers and Alya, Cascade and Kaia Ignacio's wives. It was Argus cheated on his brother with one of his wives, rumoured to be Alya. As result  the family was nearly thorn apart with fights, the effect devastating for the world. Kaia herself is seen as Ignacio's Stormkeeper. They believe the family has settled down again now and use it as cautionary tale of what upsetting family structure can do. Argus is seen as the trickster brother and his blessings looked down upon with disapproval and suspicion. In regard to Ignacio and his three wives, stallions in the clan often have three wives as well and it's their happy family number

Views on the herd

In order for their family to survive, the clan aligned itself with Garok, submitting itself to the war lord. Though they would defend War-forged without second thought and are quite proud of their country, they will put their clan's - now family's - needs above the other now united clans. Hira is much disliked by the average old school Storm bringer due to her being a mare and would rather see her marry so her husband may take over leadership. She's tolerated for the simple fact she's unbeaten. The bloody flanks are seen as a threat to War-forged and thus the clan. The average Storm bringer is not eager to go and fight a war on Aodh's behalf, but would do so simply to honor a deal and see the favor returned in their time of need.
