His people were free, but Kanaloa felt more trapped than ever. He felt failed, failed in his rank, in his life. And with the world so rapidly changing, what was left for him to do? He was old. Or at least he considered himself as such. He had to watch as life went to the young. With such talented youth, going directions his mind would have never taken, what was there left to give? With no wife, no child, what was left for him to live for? Nothing. Or so he concluded in dark hours as he patrolled without much conviction, watching out over the sea. Perhaps his role here was done, perhaps it was time he joined Renata in the next life. Find his children once again. The thought took hold of him until it seemed the only possible answer left. He didn’t want it to be painful. No he wanted to pass away happily. An ageing potion seemed like the perfect solution. If he drank enough, he’d pass away naturally, like his own grandmother had passed in her sleep. A peaceful way to go, finally a happy ending for his sad excuse of a life.
He didn’t want to rise suspicion, but he also wasn’t a thief. He left double the amount the potion would have cost as he snatched it away when nobody was looking and silently hoped they would forgive him. He waited till it was dark and went out to the docks again. He had decided the last thing he wanted to see was the sea he had watched so many times with Renata at his side. It’d be a nice place to die.
With no second thoughts, he placed the bottle to his lips, taking a few large gulps of the liquid. He waited, wondering how long it would take for the potion to work. He didn’t even get time to watch the sea again. A scourching pain took hold of his body as his legs gave out in quick order. It hurt. It hurt so bad. Kanaloa screamed and kicked in agony as his muscles seamed to tear, his bones seemed to rearrange. Tears poured from the stallion’s eyes. Of course. Of course it hurt. What had he been pretending? Life allowed no happy endings.
It hurt, it hurt and he screamed out his lungs till his vision finally went black.
