Summary: Amber gets blessed
Warnings: None
Amber had stood at her summit of mount Skeldr once, almost twice. Had been a child of the mountains from day one. She had listened to the earth's teachings and were she failed she tried to improve herself. Yet it was as if Kaia was pushing her, testing her. Letting Cascade answer her prayers before her revered mother. Watching as those around her were blessed by the earth. Time and time again, Amber had been passed by.
Her family had taught her that the earth was patient. And it was patience that Amber at times lacked. It was wisdom that had come with growing older, a growing that had been rushed, forced. Amber had wondered if that perhaps turned the earth's eyes of her completely. Last mission was the proverbial drop that made the bucket flood. Her ice, her knives, it had been good for nothing. And because of her lack of competence another War-forged had fallen, this time not merely wounded but dead. It was a lot to take in. She hadn't liked him, but he died on her watch and the had to relay on others to make it so not everyone ended up the same.
Had it been a test?
She could not help but notice that it indeed was one of Kaia's blessed children that the weapon had fallen before. Perhaps it was coincidence, but jealousy and longing burned inside her heart. She wanted to be one of those as well.
Home at the small shrine set up for Kaia, she closed her eyes and prayed. "Please mother earth, look down upon your child. Lemme know I'm seen. I'm noticed. Let me know I'm worthy."
Because if Kaia would bless her, then perhaps there was no way that she had done wrong in life. Kaia would not have cast her aside.
"Kaia. Please. Please."
Her patience again was wearing thin.
Many a night have you prayed for a Blessing. And as always, the gods were silent. But you kept trying, kept hoping, for you know that of all the gods, the earth favors the strong and resourceful. And this night, something feels different as you wait quietly in your home, and you fancy that you cans feel the earth warm and resonate beneath your hooves. The whole world seems to hold its breath, a watchful silence stretching from the whispers of tree leaves up to the stars and beyond.
Energy crackles all around you, and though you know you are alone, you suddenly feel very much watched.
“Kaia,” you whisper, and the leaves outside suddenly go still. "Please mother earth, look down upon your child. Lemme know I'm seen. I'm noticed. Let me know I'm worthy."
Silence falls as you finish speaking. You wait calmly; earth cannot be rushed, will not be rushed, and those too impatient to understand that are better off looking to the others, the more fickle and volatile of the elements. But patience has never been your strength, and as the silence stretches, so do your nerves.
"Kaia. Please. Please."
Something in the silence shifts, evolves, and without hesitating you fall to your knees, feel the earth embrace you as beneath you, a feeling of life, of connection, to the earth as you’ve never felt before.
I hear you, my child.
The voice is warm, heard not so much in words but in the rustling of leaves, the shifting of soil, the grating of rocks far below you. Yet the air around you is still, so still.
You wish for my Blessing… It is no small thing, to take the burden of the earth upon your own soul. The voice falls silent, and your throat constricts with fear- but then she speaks again. Very well. Let me see you. And though no one appears before you, you suddenly feel a presence before you, looking into you.
… Hm, but what is this? You are one of My mortals, there is no doubt you are of the earth, yet I see a Blessing of water already upon your soul. You went to My sister, before Me... No. No, I see now. She called to you, did She not? She heard your pleas and Blessed you with her ice... Well, now. My sister is wise; I will not hold Her choices against you, child. And She was right, I think: ice suits you well. And now it is My turn to Bless you. Hmm. You have the seeds of the earth within you after all, ready to grow, to burst forth and flower magnificently. You will do great things indeed… so which of my Blessings suits the soil of your soul best?
Such impatience and anger in your soul... you are a warrior, and with a fierce desire to prove yourself. In that case I think Density Control might suit you very well, lend you the strength and flexibility to destroy those who would otherwise scoff at you for your gender and size. Hm. I also see some discord in your soul, a desire for understanding and company, yet you also often isolate yourself, and wish to act independently to prove yourself. Perhaps then Beast Summoning might help you learn how to ask for help, and communicate, as well as aiding you in battle.
Well, choose, child. The earth is patient, but it is also decisive; it does not question itself, and neither should you.
She answered. Amber was aware that whatever this sensation was, it was Kaia. Kaia heard her. Tears welled up in her eyes, happiness that her goddess had finally answered her prayers making them spill over. She dropped to the ground, closer to her mother, she who sustained them all. Thank her.
Amber's heart clenched as the topic of her earlier blessing was graced. 'You didn't answer me!' she wanted to yell. But she didn't, for it was not her place to question the gods as it was not her right to turn away Cascade who had looked down upon her so graciously. Instead she prayed Kaia would not reject her for the blessing already bestowed upon her. She didn't and Amber breathed a little easier in relief. In silent reverence she let herself be seen, vulnerable like a newborn foal under the eyes of a god, let her peer in what she hid from all around her. She did not bother to hide, as she knew it would be no use, and she did not flinch as she tried to show Kaia her strength. And then she was accepted and she trembled as her choices were presented before her.
Patient but decisive. She would take that to heart. Amber had been studying tactics and it's with her talent's knowledge in the back of her mind she made her decision. Though she would have loved the control over her own body to aid her in battle, she could quite handle herself already. There would be a strategic advantage in assuming control over whatever familiar the enemy employed. Furthermore the recent stampede of mammoth proved the ability to exert some control over animals benefited the herd at large. Amber bowed her head and said with confidence. "Kaia, please bless me with beast summoning."
Very well, child. Kaia's voice is warm, both with amusement and pride. I think you will do great things with it indeed.
And as the presence of Kaia fades, a burgeoning awareness blossoms in Amber's chest, as if a seed has taken root and is pushing through, growing strong and unfurling. Kaia's Blessing is ready to be used.
As she felt the blessing take root in her, Amber bowed her head once again, bowing as deeply as she could, nose touching the ground. She pressed it closer to the earth as the presence of her goddess started to fade, reveling in every minute of it. She could have never imagined what it would be liked, even thought she had wished for it so long. It was everything and better and she tried to ingrain every moment of it in her memory. She stayed like this for minutes, even after she was again truly alone. By the time she stood again, her tears had dried and her body had stopped its trembling. When she rose again, she rose a stronger mare. You will do great things, Kaia had said. Great things indeed. Pride rose inside Amber, lifting up her chin. If her goddess expected as much from her, she was not about to let her down. Her goal was even more clear now. She was going to change things and she was going to change them for the better. One step at a time, because the earth was patient but decisive. She closed her eyes, breathed deeply yet again and before walking outside to face the world again, she whispered: “Thank you.”
