Introducing ToolKitten

Hellos, I am ToolKitten, also known as Nei Ruffino. I have been finding my time here on deviantart for 14 years. I have been able to make it many places because of the intuitive nature of the site, the way things flow to
here and there, all things considered I love the way it provides many opportunities for us in many ways, as it has provided for me I try to give back as much as possible to others.

One of those things has been community, and the sense of the knowledge and wisdom of one artist to pass on to another what they have learned, to let the newly formed take care of the thoughts of those before them,
to be inspired and driven by such natures.

To see a master is 10k failures, and we are all on our own place in the path, nobody is excluded from this, to reconize this in myself, I try to give that to others.

I am a freelance artist and writer working out of california, using photoshop for all of my digital art. I do many pieces with pencil on paper as well as traditional colors, though digital is my choice for the
strongly lit pieces that my work is known for.

February 2018

Deviousness Award Winner

There is no question that ToolKitten is a talented artist - it's evident by looking at her expansive and impressive gallery of work, most notably her comic work for Marvel, DC, and Zenoscope.
ToolKitten's gallery on DeviantArt showcases her artistic growth and process but what is most special is that she took this time to also encourage and improve others. This practice of give and take is integral to
the core of DeviantArt and ToolKitten continues to demonstrate that, after 14 years, and through all her success, she's still a deviant at heart. It is because of this that we are honored to award Deviousness
for February 2018 to ToolKitten!

ToolKitten's artwork is way too spectacular to describe it in a few words. Just a glimpse at the gallery made me an instant watcher. The beauty of the gallery is one thing but what's even more important: the artwork is a wonderful source of inspiration. Congratulations

Gaze upon her works and be astonished. Nei Ruffino aka ToolKitten is a marvelous journey of an artist finding her footing, developing her skills, and growing constantly as multi-talented, multi-faceted, and expressive soul. Exploring many of the mediums and processes of creative expression, she seems to always find the best angle of approach for her, and then comes out the other side, accomplished and with a fascinating insight. Energy, drive, and a lot of very hard work, long hours, and always pushing the envelope, if anyone can be said to be completely immersed in her work and her art, Nei is one of them. The recognition for her work, the large base of support she has found, is all very much something she has earned. And it shows in the meticulous and yet, sometimes wild explosions of her continuing exploration and study of how to always do things better, do things that stretch her spirit, and her skills. As a certain Headmaster might say. Worthy.

ToolKitten has been a staple of this site for the majority of its time as a community. While she definitely has improved since she came here, especially in terms of professional progression, she has also encouraged those around her and shared good advise and counsel. ToolKitten also has a gallery that stands the test of time, her oldest published works still worthy of your +fav, and her art still garnering views. Throughout all, as evidenced by the journal she published recently, she has remained a part of this community, enriching it with her art and her presence while remaining humble. As example of an artist with both skill and grace, if you haven't perused her gallery, or engaged her in a conversation, then I assure you - you are missing out!

Once you've seen ToolKitten's art, there's no mistaking it when latest, distinctive piece pops up in your inbox. Her art is full of color and life - and that extra, magical something that inspires and captivates
her watchers and fans. She infuses everything she draws with her bright energy, and each new art piece she crafts is a treat to see. Congratulations to ToolKitten for this well-deserved honor!

ToolKitten is not only a leader in her field as a colorist, but she is genuinely kind and encouraging - I remember when she gave me detailed advice even though she knew that I wasn't interested in becoming a professional artist. She has also spent a lot of time and energy creating tutorials to break down her methods and reveal her secrets, encouraging all others to learn by making what she does much more accessible. A truly inspiring person!

It is no secret that ToolKitten is an amazing artist. Whether it be a comic book illustration, or a fantasy artwork, or a pop culture piece - each work is created with a level of dedication to detail that separates ToolKitten from others. As a viewer of her work, you can not help but be in awe of her skill, and as a fan - truly inspired. In my mind, there is nobody more worthy of this award - congratulations ToolKitten.

ToolKitten is an artist you can't seem to get enough. Watching her talent grow is an amazing journey and she never stops to amaze me with her works. You can tell right away it's HER art, her style is unique, one of a kind. I'm happy she recieved Deviousness Award as she truly deserves one. Congratulations ToolKitten.

I have been a fan of ToolKitten for years. I love her amazing artwork and I'm so glad she's being awarded Deviousness! Congratulations, ToolKitten

ToolKitten has such a beautiful ability to breath so much life into their work. From their fluid figures to the bright, soft and gentle color work, ToolKitten's art does not disappoint.

It's a unique feeling to know an artist as more than someone who makes pretty pictures and dazzles the synapses. While many artists leave me inspired and awestruck, Nei Ruffino stands above them with the distinct accolade of being the industry Sherpa who guided many of us into comic art. She's so much more than a great artist; she's an incredible teacher, too. What you can learn by watching her work is mind-blowing! With her Livestreams, she shows that painting isn't some unholy mysticism or demonic sorcery. It's tools we all have, hardware within our reach, and the "secret ingredient" is straight-up discipline and practice. Seeing her artistic process with your own eyes will elevate anyone to greater levels of capability they never previously imagined.
Nei's constant desire to help leaves a permanent impact on many. In her wake, countless artists who know an effective process for orchestrating light to dance on a page, countless who know their greatest asset is their aesthetic style, and countless subscribers to the divine Gospel that not even God can help you if you anti-alias your flats.

I am mesmerized by ToolKitten's use of traditional tools; my favorite being the pencil. Originally, I followed ToolKitten because I was interested in her coloring style, but as her deviations came my way throughout the years, I became very fond of the traditional sketches that appear in her gallery. Her ability to vary line widths and to create the sense of motion in her traditional art is what inspires me most throughout her works.

ToolKitten is an inspiration and an example for every artist in DA because like no artist she has used the site as her platform to grow. If you dig around her gallery you will see that when she first joined the site she was just another artist with more passion than skill. But through sheer hard work, she grew artistically and professionally. All the while giving back to the community. It's a journey that I hope we can keep witnessing.

Congratulations to ToolKitten!

Trophy Emote 2 Congrats to ToolKitten Well deserved.
You know, there was a time when DC had their artists and Marvel had theirs.
It's really cool to see people doing work for both these days.
And before I forget, It's also really cool that ToolKitten does all her work in Photoshop.
I don't think people realize how much you can actually do with it!

Eclipse Change Log: December 12, 2018

This week, nearly the whole DeviantArt team — encompassing staff members from Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, Kiev, and Vancouver, to name a few — has come together at our HQ in Hollywood to focus on Eclipse and plan what’s in store for 2019.

As a reminder, we’re continuing to work on the bigger community feedback concerns — including customization and improvements to Feedback — and we hope to share more soon.

Since the holidays are coming up, and many people on our team are traveling or taking time off, we won’t have a change log to share for a short while. But we want to let you all know that we are continuing to review and analyze your feedback, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you early next year!

Change Log

Literature descriptions are back! (Popular request!)After replying to a comment in Feedback, the notification is now automatically removed. (Popular request!)Comment link pages now have "parent" and "top" buttons, and are now centered for easy readability. (Popular request!)Scraps are back! You can now mention a deviant just by typing (rather than selecting them from the list). The Gift dropdown on profile now tells you when you've already given them a llama or they are full of cake. Removed minimum character count in Status Updates and Journals, allowing deviants to share a post that simply includes a deviation, gallery, or video.
