We at deviantART would like to present our first contest since dav5, one that will rock your world just as much as dav5 did.  It seems like we never stop rocking you guys.  In celebration of their new album, Barenaked Ladies would like YOU to design a t-shirt for their upcoming tour!

All you have to do is create a new design for Barenaked Ladies (please see below contest guideline). The top contenders will be presented to the band, and they will choose a winner, who will receive $1000 in prizes!

Barenaked Ladies (often abbreviated as BNL) are a Canadian alternative pop rock group comprised of band members Steven Page, Ed Robertson, Tyler Stewart, Kevin Hearn and Jim Creeggan.  Formed in Toronto in 1988, they are best know for their hit singles, "One Week", "Pinch Me", "If I Had $1000000" and "Brian Wilson", and have grown to become one of North America's best-loved live acts. BNL will release their eighth studio album, "Barenaked Ladies Are Me", this September 12th.

Would be great but I just dont like not getting credited for my work if I were to win. Sure they can have the rights but I would still like to have my name somewhere as credit and also to be able to put a picture of the design in my portfolio as well.

I dont know - its too bad as this would be fun =)

I just read some of the negative comments on here regarding this contest. What ever happened to something just being fun? And what about the saying "You never know where this might lead..."? I'm a firm believer in that.

So, you are insulted that the prizes aren't bigger, and that you don't get to retain rights over a t-shirt design that would feature BNL? Okay. What's your alternative? Have you got people knocking down your door, handing you wads of cash for your designs right now? If you do, GREAT! Then obviously you don't need to sweat over this contest. If you don't... then what's the fuss?

There's this little thing called 'exposure' that is worth quite a bit to an artist, last time I looked. There are projects that I have done in my life which paid very little because I was 'new on the scene' so to speak... but the reward was worth it. Why? Here's the key point, pay attention; I got great word-of-mouth advertising. *People saw the quality of my work who normally would not see it otherwise*. All this has lead to higher paying work. It didn't water down my 'worth as a viable artist' by doing that at all.

If you have some amazing, award winning t-shirt graphic in your portfolio that you know is going to be a cash cow, well then yeah - don't use it for this contest! Make up something new. If you get paid so much right now for your stuff that it's not worth it to you to enter this for a little exposure, then good on ya, step aside and let the rest of us enter. Just remember, there are a LOT of people out here who aren't making anything on their art right now, and who could use a little boost of confidence like winning a contest. And hey, if they like the band - all the better! I happen to love BNL, and would be stoked to see them use a design of mine. I hope they make bazillions on it! Because, gee - if one design ended up making them a lot of money in merchandise, ya think they might look into calling that artist up again to do more art for them, and this time pay outright as a comissioned artist? Could happen! It is worth a shot, in my line of reasoning. And if they don't? Oh well, head on to the next one, right?

As for the contracts and legal-shmegal crap... I hate to break it to you, but that's business. It happens all the time. Everyone has to cover their butts. If it makes you scared, if it flies in the face of your artistic sensibilities, then don't enter...but be prepared. Many, if not all commercial projects will have similarly worded contracts associated with them. It's a product, people... not artwork destined for the Louvre. And if you think your art IS that good, and that you *should* be paid truckloads for it, then by all means, do some research on how to submit your portfolio for contract work to BNL and any other band you can think of. Nothing is stopping you.

Everything has potential. You put yourself out there, and there is the potential of better things coming your way. Simple as that.

to bad you dont get any exposure considering its all done online and you dont atain the ownership to your own work so that means the only people that know you did it are barenaked ladies which will obviously get you very far
