Get an Art Education Without Expensive Art Schools
As much as I love my school, Academy of Art University, it's not necessary to attend a special art school in order to learn about art. Because of the internet, there are plenty of resources available for those who are self-motivated and eager to learn.
I'll start with some of the cheapest resources, ending with more expensive ones:
1. Blogs, podcasts and livestreams. Most professional artists keep blogs, and these things are free treasure troves of information. The best blogs don't only show off art, they also give tips about the business of art and introduce you to new resources. Try starting with Muddy Colors, a super informative blog run by several professional painters and sculptors:  For podcasts, check out Chris Oatley's artcast: Also check out the Awesome Horse Studios livestream:
2. Online tutorials and videos. I basically taught myself digital painting by combini

Burn on big river, burn on.
Artist | Professional | Other
United States
Aspiring cartoonist who feasts on beans, potatoes, pasta and eggs as he pursues his greater ambition.

Current Residence: San Diego

If you follow this account on a regular basis you will probably notice I've become increasingly erratic about posting here. My apologies.

Deviant Art isn't the best place to post cartoons online for a variety of reasons. Considering the way the site is designed it's hard to find cartoons and it is hard to figure out where to post them where people will see them.

Plus DA just doesn't have that large of an audience for cartoons unless you create Furry, Yaoi or other work for very specific fandoms.

I won't stop posting on DA in the foreseeable future, I'm just probably going to be pretty flaky about it.

If you're interested in following Vegetables for Dessert (the name of the strip) on a regular basis you can find it on:…

Tapastic, a great site for viewing and posting comics. If you are a cartoonist I would highly recommend using this site.…

I'm pretty sure you all know what facebook is.  Though facebook won't always tell people when a new cartoon is posted.…

I hear tumblr is pretty popular with the kids these days too.

Awesome.  There's a lot more of them elsewhere.

Had to watch you. We share a similar sense of humor. If you get the chance to check out my strips, you'll see what I mean. Also, reading your journal entries, we both want to gain an audience for the same reasons. You've done great so far as you've been on dA for a lot less time than me and gained a lot more views.

Eh... the views are honestly kind of a flukey thing.  Most of the traffic stems from three MLP fan comics, and much of the rest of it comes from a few successful posts on reddit.

Building an audience for a webcomic is a tricky thing, it requires a great deal of patience, and it is more or less a matter of finding a community that shares your comedic sensibilities and is also under served in terms of entertainment.

The easiest things you can do to help yourself as a creator are to be productive and find other places to post your work other than DA.

If you would like more thoughts and opinions on webcomics, feel free to ask.  I think about this stuff obsessively.

Thanks for the advice. The problem with humor is that it's relative, and my humor is quite sick at times! I did tone it down when my strips were getting published a few years back in a few local papers, but since they were dropped the humor has gotten decidedly grosser, which for me, is more fun, plus I don't have to stick to a required format now.

I have put them on other sites like Shadowness and toonsup and they have a Facebook page, but so far the best response has been with dA. Not a lot of views, but I do get some good positive comments. I guess it's just a matter of plugging away. I try not to think about it too much, it gets too frustrating.

Thanks again, and I'll bend your ear for more advice in the future should I need it. :iconnuttygerbilplz::iconrussygerbilplz:
