Update...

I like the fact that the general response to Dead Fantasy is more "I hope to see X character in the next one etc etc." It shows that as far as audiences go, the RPG/Anime demographic tends to lean more towards creativity then the Halo/Shooter demo. Something I'm glad to see cause somewhere down the line I want more people to be doing what I'm doing. Hell I can't see why it hasn't happened already.

I can say I sooooo want to put more characters into the series, but I'd be insane to up the Poly count more than it already is. Thus far with the 6 characters on screen I've used some pretty clever tactics to keep up efficiency, but I have a feeling once design starts ramping up at my job and I'm pouring more juice into my professional work that I'll have to comphensate for the lack of my off time creative juice by simply investing in more hardware.

Now If (if depending solely on how quickly I can work) I were to add characters, my first choice would be to add Rinoa, my all time fav FF girl (plus I have a visual cue in my head that will knock  your socks off). But one on other thing to consider is the continuity of it overall. There are few movies let alone fighting shorts out there that will do 3 on 3 fighting. Think back to most action movies out there and it's usually 1 vs 1, 1 vs 100, 2 vs 2, 2 vs 1. 3 on 3 currently is certainly difficult in terms of directing when I constantly have to ask myself. "Is there too many people on screen?" or "Has this person been off screen too long?" On top of this 3 on 3 being of 6 fighters who are meant to appropriate on equal levels, but also with the trademark high level agility movement. So being that if I were to add characters first I'd have to balance it. And with everything there are rules to be followed.

1. Adding one Character to each side would make it 4 vs 4. Since 4 isn't a primary number I'd have to add 2 to each side, therefore making it a 5 vs 5. Now that would be crazy. Now there are plenty of characters to draw from on the FF side, but it's not that easy on the DOA side for rule #2...

2. This is a weapon battle. In classic RPG's a weapon is in a way part of the Character Yuna = Guns, Kasumi = Sword, Ayane = Dbl Sword (Weird purple blade she gets from defeating her father Genra from DOA3), Rikku = Blades. Now that's just about it for weapons on the DOA side, which brought about adding Hitomi = Fists, which was then Balanced with Tifa = Also Fists.

The problem now is even though there are plenty of girls on the FF side who have weapons, there are no girls left on the DOA side in which I can justify a weapon. Sure perhaps Lei Fang could wield a staff, or Christie could use a knife/wire ('cause she's an assassin) but none of it is really justified to their character. It's that level of thought that I try to put into my work. Even though the Ayane thing was a stretch, it was still recognizable to her character. So the next furthest thing would be to perhaps include one of the guys (read rule #3) or extend to universe to encompass other games in the DOA universe, like Ninja Gaiden... wait a sec...   :?

3. No guys... they're harder to model/find parts for. Don't ask me why.

4. Tag battle MUST wrap up in ep.2 Why? Firstly because my computer is going to have an aneurysm. And because I've been waiting to get to Dead Fantasy V for months since the series' conception. If I am to do so in a reasonable time *Spoilers* the 3/5 of them MUST break off into their individual fights by the end of this episode. Which means also to be fair to the characters that make their late entry, this one is going to be LOOONNGGG

5. I like primary numbers

All that aside I hope everyone is having a nice Holiday Season, I'm due to fly home in a few days and spend some long overdue time with the girlfriend. One thing I do like here in Chicago is that I will always be a child fond of snow.

Again I apologize for not getting back to people, I simply don't want to say something thoughtless. But I do hear you and try shave your way at least the first layer of my mind into responding constructively somehow.

Let's see if I can get this done round early next year

No rest for the wicked

whatever that means...

Very nice. I love the move/countermove of the choreography. This is exactly the kind of running battle that I always imagined a GOOD Dead or Alive movie would have.

It might help to slow the action down slightly though. I've watched it a couple of times and it can still be hard to follow. I have to watch the slow-motion version on youtube if I want to actually catch the details of the fight. Those details are really what make this more than just "that was a blur, but I'm sure it must have been totally awesome." (The way Kasumi twists out of the way of a gunshot at 0:54 for example. Very cool.)

Also, making a full-screen version rather than the 1/3-screen version from gametrailers if only so people could download it would be appreciated. Action scenes really benefit from being able to see more detail due to a bigger screen.

As far as new characters, that sounds like a mountain of effort. Breaking it up into two 2v2 fights with people occasionally moving between them might satisfy the "prime numbers" requirement since 2 is a prime.

I'm not sure about current DoA continuity but DoA 2 had an 'evil twin' for Kasumi. Using a different costume and hairstyle might be enough to differentiate her and she would use a sword.

Selfishly, I'm going to suggest that if you do add characters you consider Celes (FF VI). She fights with a longsword, which is a weapon none of the characters are currently using but that should be easy to use when fighting the others. I'm not sure how well Rinoa's razor-frisbee/boomerang will work in an extended battle: I wold expect her to wind up using a lot of barehanded attacks between sweeps with the frisbee. But, if you can make it cool, more power to you.

well the reasoning for people not doing what you're doing yet is the simple fact that you're really really good at this stuff, and lots of the people that know of your work probably don't have the skills or the machinary to do such things [might not have the money to get the machinary need either] (Example: me) and some others don't really have the drive to do it even if they have everything needed. but i do know there are some people out there making movies like yours though most use things like WoW and Halo to do them, i've not see someone pull any characters out from anything else other than you though.
and your right there should be no guys, girls are better looking anyways, unless you get into naruto or something like that wherein the best looking two characters are haku and kakashi both being male. or the weird ambiguos characters like haseo (.hack//G.U.) and yet again haku (naruto) but other than that it's always girls they look good and their bodys are more reliable for the flexibility need and sex appeal and such.

Have Yuna summon Shiva.
Have Shiva turns into an uncontrollable Dark Aeon and destroy all of them :P
haha jk.

But I think a really interesting character to consider is Fran from FFXII. She'd be a bit like Kasumi + Yuna (ninja sword/long range weapon (bow)), but her magic of the wood/reaction to mist/quickenings could add an interesting twist. She's also quite adept with hand to hand combat.

If you were to add a DOA girl, I'd definitely consider Rachel from Ninja Gaiden or Lei-Fang (with nunchakus or fans).

I feel like an AMAZING fight would be a battle between comic book characters. (female X-men vs. justice league anyone?)

Hey, Bro.

Great job of the film. Seemed shorter then the Haloid, but still well worth the wait.

And your're right. The DOA girls tend not to have weapons. The best thing I can suggest is to impliment Ninja Gaiden characters into the fold for the DOA girls. Or simply base a weapon of of their outfits. Lai Fang seems more like someone that'd use a set of sharp fans as a weapon. Go back to the DOA Survival mode. Each girl has a speacial item to pick up (it'll take a while to see them all), Maybe that could be their weapon. I remember one of the girls like cooking. It may sem odd, but a frying pan could be pretty useful in a fight (See Agent Cody Banks).

Whatever you choose, I'm sure it'l look great.

Merry Christmas, Bro.

PS: I created a 3D mascot for 360style.net. What would it take to get him used in one of your films? Just wondering.

I love your work ^_^ Especially your movies. You've also inspired me into wanting to work with 3D Animation, thanks :)

The first time I saw Dead Fantasy, I was in awe. Since then I've watched it countless times, and I still get chills from watching it. I won't be a n00b and ask when the next one is being released, but ... is the progress on no.2 good? I hope so ^_^ I'm surprised you've not been spammed with add-demands ...

*coughaddbeatrixorfreyacough* :D Just kidding.

Good luck in the future, and Merry Christmas ^_^

Its deliciously amazing.

Rinoa is lame. She was so plain and boring compared to Selphie and Quistis. If you compare the 3D FF brunette leads (Tifa, Rinoa, Dagger, Yuna, Ashelia), Rinoa is easily the least compelling.

Yes, put Rachel in. "She dispatches Fiends with the aid of her Warhammer (a fauchard-like weapon), the Peluda Tail (a whip), and her Blades of Ouroborus sorcery." RACHEL!!!

maybe you could draw from another popular 3D fighting game? perhaps Soul Calibur if those models aren't too tough on your compy. =] those ladies are pretty nifty, and they're multi-platform like DoA (used to be lol)

Oh, and I forgot to say: I completely agree with Firia. A hand-to-hand specialist vs a weapon fighter, if done correctly, can be a LOT more interesting than just hand-to-hand vs hand-to-hand or weapon vs weapon. But again, it's all up to your vision and the way you want to do things. ^__^

Have fun, and all the best.

^_^ Let me just begin by saying that I really like the stuff you've been making, especially Dead Fantasy, and that you're part of the reason that I'm taking up 3D animation next year.
Now to what I was planning on saying: Don't let the fans dominate your work. If they say "add so and so character", don't feel the pressure to add any more characters than you had planned/can manage etc. In the end it's your work and they're getting to watch it for free. That, and it'll be damn awesome no matter what you do with it. :D
Also, I wish I could help you on the balancing with Rinoa front (partially because she's my favourite FF chick too), but alas, I don't know much about DOA characters. However, if you do manage to fit her and an opponent in and do want to make it 5v5, I suggest that you could add Aerith and possibly have Lei Fang with a staff? I dunno, just an idea for if you need one. ^_^

Anywho, thanks for making Dead Fantasy! And keep up the good work (without overworking yourself). ^_~

Wow. I've got nothin'...

I'm definitely aiming to pick up the torch and run
with this type of movie making. Probably not as
thought out as yours though. My brain is more
ADD. ...and the reason I have not yet had success
in making a movie is technical related. I think my
computer just doesn't work well with Poser...yet. It's annoying. I probably just need a better video
card.

3 Vs 3 is a good number. Is there going to be
one evil that they will all have to team up against?
If so, then you could always add lots of goons that
try to take them down. If it went that direction
you could probably focus less on the numbers
balance thing and more on creative tag teaming.

or...

What if the 6 girls got split up and had to head
2 separate directions...which eventually lead to the
same place for the final showdown.

or...

Maybe you could throw and odd number in there and
then one of them gets singled out or trapped,
forcing them to face a dark dark enemy...at

or...

maybe the all just order pizza a kick it at Tifa's
for the weekend.

wonder if it has anything to do with first vs 3rd person perspective.

but then RPG/Anime is two broad categories, whne Halo is one of the Shooter genre. The sci fi shootiness type Halo is, then you've got Ghost in the Shell, Bubblegum Crisis, and so on.

Why not have the 3D generation of FF heroines vs the SNES generation?

of RPG's, you ever play a Shin Megami Tensei one? Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga?

Absolutely!

I deal with 3rd person vs 1st person on a daily basis at work. A majority of the designers on our team let alone our company are FPS players. I'm one of the few here who know the workarounds on designing action for 3rd person and it comes up every friggin day!

Is Shin Megami Tensei also Persona? I just bought Persona 3 because I heard so many good things about it. (Plus it came with the artbook) But I've yet to play it.

I Love the contemporary art style of the game especially back when I noticed part 1.

I don't think the Persona Franchise is popular enough though to justify making whole movies for it though. If taking what is done well is the character design, then somewhere down the line I'm going to try and translate that same contemporary design towards my original characters (usually 3d anime "persona's" [hahahahahahaha] of my friends) with my original story. If I ever get back to it.

Ask me again about that in a few years... ...hopefully.

Maybe a better question is the Western Audience VS the Eastern Audience?

Hmmm, maybe thats why my favorite FPS is a 3rdPS, Gears of War. That and I like how its designs (DUDE COVERED IN BATS)

Yeah, I've been a fan of Kaneko ever since seeing Persona on PS1 in those brittle clear plastic cases at Best Buy years ago.

>>Maybe a better question is the Western Audience VS the Eastern Audience?

On that, people like to state many differences, like west loevs guns east doesn't...
but it's important to remember that Hollywood action flicks do great in Japan too. Hong Kong also produces a whole ton of very gritty, gunny, shooty films that influence American gritty gunny shooty films

It could be marketing, though I think it could just be design. Take Halo... hasn't made any big splash. My opinion is its designs are not particularly impressive. But Terminator, Predator, Aliens, those model kits are still being made in Japan, and the very best ones are sculpted by Takayuki Takeya who works with Squaresoft too, he did the monsters in FFAdvent Children.

Send in the men from Final Fantasy to spice things up a bit. e.g. Cloud, Vincent, Kadaj, etc (I'm only familiar with FF7 which was the best action movie of all time). I just think that might really cause some conflict. Then again, the men might own the feminists so that maybe a problem. Oh well I'm just making a suggestion.

If adding more characters would prove to be too diffiult then don't do it. I know we'd all love to see our favourites turn up but this has to be balanced by the fact that having too many characters would be unworkable. If you stick with a smaller cast you'll avoid the problems of balancing the time they each spend on screen. Just my take on it I guess.

And try and get some sleep =P

Other than saying; I'm sure some hand to hand vs weapon play wouldn't be to hard to show off. I mean, they are already titans on the field of battle. One titan vs another with a weapon just means one proficantcy vs another.

Perhaps, when wrapped up with other hand to hand fighters, focus more on style of combat? Kung Fu, for example, as opposed to hardcore punches and kicks.
