Cassandra Cain Animation Design by MonteCreations Cassandra Cain Animation Design by MonteCreations
So i've been getting more into comics and one of which is Cassandra Cain's run as batgirl; loving it. Frankly its all the more made me want to see her animated... so sad the new DC relaunch kinda erased her from existence... only for the time being i hope. Also they already got a new batman series in the works where she probably won't appear... they had the bright idea of pairing Batman up with Katana of all people(if Bats is gonna team up with an Asian chick, why not cassie?... i blame the relaunch)... but maybe if DC does ever get around to reintroducing Cassie she'll show up in time for the NEXT next batman series... ya its gonna be a LONG wait if she ever gets her shot

Anyway this is basically my shot at a Cassandra Cain design meant more for animation. really wasn't sure on the color scheme of the costume. Changed the eyes from black to white only because I wanted them to be more pronounced; Cassie's a girl who can't really speak so she's got to be able to express herself well visually and with her covering her mouth we are left to her eyes and body movement. Her original design is made of so much black it makes me wonder how well it would work in animation so I played around a bit... tried color scheme's based more on Barbara's batgirl costumes and also a color scheme based on Batman from the new adventures of batman and robin.

Cassandra Cain aka Batgirl belongs to DC comics

I love this! I think I prefer the traditional look still, but the variations are all really cool, and I adore her civvies design.

I like the first two hair styles in the three unmasked versions best. Most fits her overall comic look. Out of the costumes, the first being based of her comic one is best, but I also like the third one you made. Not sure why exactly, might be the lack of yellow. Too much of a bright color like yellow doesn't fit with the idea of the Bat to me. I do have one critic. I know you're going for the newer animated cartoon look, and that's fine. But I've an issue with how both here and that cartoon's figure style for teens. I mean, Barbra ended up in college in the series, but still looked closer to 12 then 18. And yes, Cass is a smaller person, being part Asian, but an adjustment to make her look a bit more mature and up to ass kicking might be helpful.

Eh, chalk it up to personal taste. I always had a tendency towards art styles that are more exaggerated than ones that seem more realistic. I always loved the range of character design you can get when dealing with an exaggerated style. In Cassie's case I wanted to make it clear that she was a teenager and not an adult yet(even though in the comics she was 17 and thus very close), so i pushed her to being less mature in appearance.

I suppose I can appreciate that. After all, it is a superhero series, realistic doesn't seem to apply. Still, it kinda bothered me in the last series how Gordon didn't age or mature at all, even though (timeline wise) some 3 or 4 years go by for her. They could have let her grow up a little, yet still keep the general look. And poor Greyson.....

Really nice! I always thought that despite how visually cool her costume is, being all black, it'd be really hard to pull of in a visual style where the emphasis is more on solid values than intensely detailed lighting, but these are all really well done despite that. I think the last option would probably work best on a general level, while the first one could be used for more dramatic effect, like in an opening title sequence. Anyhow, nice job!

(Also, did you know that there was once a pitch to do a Batman cartoon based on the No Man's Land story arc, with Cassandra as Batgirl? The full scoop is here: [link] I kind of like your designs more than what's shown in the image there, though. :) )

ikr? Cassandra Cain was definitely my favourite Batgirl and it's completely unfair that she got bumped for Barbara Gorden :P

I like the last one :)

Ya not to mention that becoming Oracle did a lot of good for Barbara's character. Going back to being batgirl not only hurts Cassandra and Stephanie, but it feels like a step backwards for herself. Three great characters, hurt by one move.

 One bad move. It was really unrealistic if you ask me, seeing as she had that whole spine injury :P
