Animorphs: Andalite Neighbors by Monster-Man-08 Animorphs: Andalite Neighbors by Monster-Man-08
Three creatures from the Andalite's unnamed homeworld.

Kafit Bird - One of only three varieties of 'birds' on the planet. Confusingly, Ax and his brother Elfangor give conflicting descriptions, namely the number of wings. Ax says it has 6 wings, while Elfangor says it has 12. Either way it's far too many...

Hoober (the green thing) - some little bouncing ground dweller, with bulging eyes

unnamed armored predator - A large predator that is known to go after Andalites (at least back in their "stone age"). It's armored hide and quick reflexes are well adapted for hunting.

BOOK: The Andalite Chronicles, The Ellimist Chronicles

Animorphs and all related characters belong to K.A. Applegate

Skagit birds have 12 wings total or as you could also say 6 pairs of wings.

I'd think the kafit bird would only have six total limbs, like the other animals on the Andalite homeworld. Perhaps some of its wings double as legs? So when it's flying, it uses all six limbs for locomotion, but when it perches it uses some for grasping.

The odd thing is that their mouths are all on their heads. If they have shared evolutionary ancestry with andalites, they should have their mouths on their limbs. The kafit bird, for example, would have a serrated spike for a beak, but would have mouths on its limbs; I'd suggest one or two pairs of limbs have hollow spikes used to drain speared prey of bodily fluids and squishier organs during flight, and then the dead prey are dropped from the sky. The andalite predator would have jaws in its paws, not its head.

I think one of the books (Hork bajir Chronicles I believe) stated that all predators who hunt andalites are extinct in modern day...kind of makes me think the more advanced andalites actually wiped them all out. <.<

Always loved the kafit bird though :XD:

I still haven't the foggiest clue how a Kafit Bird can manage to stay in the air with a body structure like that.

I think what Ax ment was that had six pairs of wings, Elfangor said it had 12 wings.

I especially like your predator. It manages to call to mind Earth's own extinct megafauna while still looking pretty alien.

As strange as it sounds, I'd be more inclined to believe Elfangor, since he's older and he had seen one more recently when he described it to the reader than when Ax described it to his friends.

In my opinion, if you're a predator, & going after andalites, you'd need armor, because of the andalites' tail blades

In support of Poncho, I think speed would've assisted the Stone Age Andalites moreso than thier "tail blades". First, remember the Elimist Chronicles. The Andalite's only have short, pointed "blades" at that point--as if their blades were just in the process of evolving. Furthermore, Toomin himself also said something like "I didn't know something that big could move so fast). Also, Aldrea's mother in the Hork-Bajir Chronicles tells Aldrea that Andalites were prey animals, with only thier speed to "save" them (that is until their blades evolved).

So, in a way, I agree with poncho in that whatever hunted Andalites had to be a little more, how to say, spry.

The creature that Monster Man has created reminds me of a Ankylosaurus or Edmontosaurus (pardon me if I butchered the spelling of those names). Really, really well armored, but cumbersome.

There is the 12 wing 6 wing debate. From a scientific view, I think twelve is just too many wings--no matter what planet you're on. Think of the weight. If the Kafit Bird hunted "small arboreal critters" on the Andalite homeworld, it would have to be fairly swift, like a king fisher or heron--just with more wings. The extra wings would weigh it down, not to mention making it extrememly difficult to flit from branch to branch in search of prey.

The 12, 6 debate could also stem from a miscommunication between Applegate and the ghost writer(s)--as she used a LOT of them.
