Remember When Scholastic Was Awesome? by Monkey-Scientist Remember When Scholastic Was Awesome? by Monkey-Scientist
Those were the days! :D Yep, another random obscure body-swap pic, this one from the "Help! I'm Trapped..." series. Specifically, "Help! I'm Trapped In An Alien's Body" which is honestly the best of the books in my opinion. The series revolved around Jake Sherman (and occasionally some of his friends) swapping bodes with all kinds of things. Dogs, vampires, super models, the principal, a Hulk Hogan ripoff, etc. As the title of this book suggests, Jake swaps bodies with an alien. This book was my favorite due to how the alien body was presented, as being this athletic and stout body with insanely long arms. There's a part where he uses his stretchy alien arms to win a soccer match, which I find awesome. :D

And if you're wondering, no the alien in the book does not resemble the one on the cover. I think the artist was told "Just draw a generic alien with a kid's face on it" and he promptly did so. Still, it's a pretty nifty cover, and manages to be just as memorable as the Animorphs covers. While this series most likely did not get me into swaps, it did show my what COULD be done with them. Because body-swapping in this series was more than just a bland "episode-of-the-week" gimmick. Sure, Jake and friends still learned lessons, but the descriptions of these bodies were pretty dang good. When I started writing TFs and Swaps, my goal was to be as descriptive as Todd Strasser is in this series.

It sucks that this series is as obscure as it is. It never really took off like Animorphs or Goosebumps, and as a result ended up forgotten. I'd see these in my library all the time and would rarely see people walk without these books in tow. Heck, I don't even think this series ever received a reprint! If I ever get the money or resources, I'd totally love to buy the copyright to this series from Scholastic, just so I can reprint the old stuff and make new books in the series myself. :D It's a crazy dream, but hey. Who knows? Maybe one day I'll pull it off. :) But yeah, this pic is not owned by me. Both "Help! I'm Trapped..." and any characters and books within are the copyright of Scholastic (FOR NOW!)

I particularly enjoy the one titled "Help! I'm Trapped In My Sister's Body!".  I've found that one several times at thrift stores and sent them to other body-swap and TG fans.  I have several of these books in a collection; they show up  often at thrift stores and garage sales.

Oh yeah, that's a good one. Though I've always preferred the animal/alien ones, since I wasn't super big into TG back then. :D

It's a fairly realistic story, aside from the obvious bodyswap portion.  Jake ends up doing the usual girly things (sleepover, etc).  It fits the series.  :)

Yeah, sadly there's not a whole lot of book series like it. There's Katie Kazoo Switcheroo, but I was never a big fan of those books. Not as good as "Help! I'm Trapped..." in my opinion. :)

These remind me a bit of the books I read about like for example the 'You Are' ones,  I remember there was one where you are turned into a shark.

I just read all your comments in Christopher Walken's voice now. XD I know that's a random thing to say, but when you're rockin' the Walken, then you're talkin' the Walken. :D

I get that all the time,  especially on the forums.  I tend to RP as 'Walken'  on the forums as well or do it to mess with people.

Yeah, believe it or not, body-swaps used to creep me out as well. I remember being frightened of the episode where Ginyu stole Goku's body, to the point where when I got a VHS tape featuring episodes from that arc of DBZ I almost didn't watch it out of fear. Like you said though, changed over time. :)

Yeah, true. Stuff we hate when we are younger has a tendency to become our favorite things. Heck, if I didn't start liking swaps, I wouldn't be on DA right now. So some things pan out in a good way. :)

Hey man guess what? You're not alone! I also know about these and though I haven't read most of them, I do own most or all. And yes I agree, though in school I was rarely allowed by my parents to order any books, I do remember how excited I used to be to look through the Scholastic (and even Arrow) catalogs at potential books of interest.

Help! I'm Trapped in My Sister's Body was the first one I found, don't remember when or how long ago, read it and really enjoyed it. Sometime afterwards, I decided to collect what others I could in this series, even though most don't have a TG or even human swap theme to them. Also imo, Todd Strasser is a good writer.

Here's what I know of/own of the rest, and it seems like I own 2 different cover versions of one of them, so there might actually have been a reprint, you might want to check it out.

Help! I'm Trapped in Obedience School
Help! I'm Trapped in Obedience School Again (only one that had a same-type-swap-sequel?)
Help! I'm Trapped in My Lunch Lady's Body
Help! I'm Trapped in an Alien's Body (the one you made this post about)
Help! I'm Trapped in the First Day of School
Help! I'm Trapped in My Gym Teacher's Body
Help! I'm Trapped in My Teacher's Body (This is the one I seem to have the 2 copies of. The full-grown teacher has his back to us and is looking in the mirror, where Jake is shown, in his own size, dressed in the teacher's brown suit, tie and glasses. A girl, must be one of Jake's Friends, is looking at the teacher with her hands on her cheeks and her mouth open in shock. Copyright 1993.)
Help! I'm Trapped in My Teacher's Body! (This is the reprint, story originally copyright 1993, reprint edition copyright 2005. This one has an ! at the end of the title, which I've not seen otherwise in this series. On the cover, we only see young Jake, facing us and a blackboard behind him, dressed as described in the mirror of the other My Teacher's Body description I gave.)

I don't know if you knew about these already, but here's a couple great recommendations you should look into. They don't have the body swap theme but they're very good still, and were also done by Scholastic.
Half Magic by Edward Eager
Seven-Day Magic (also by Edward Eager, this one is a sequel)

I'll give you an idea about the first one, without any spoilers. These are about a group of 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. In the first book, they find a magic coin that has a surprising effect, not only is it magic and can grant their wishes, they have to be careful because it will only grant half of their wish, or if they wanted all of their wish, they'd have to double the effects themselves. I have yet to read all of the 2nd book but I understand it is also related to wishing, but this time the wishes last 7 days.

Wooooow, long comment! But I get the gist of it. Yeah, those Magic Books sound fun, I always love some silly wish shenanigans. I'll have to look into those. :) And yeah, Help! I'm Trapped was a great series. I think there's been a couple reprints, but nothing done recently. Would love to see this series make some sort of resurgence. :D

A lot of people dream of buying their favorite series because they don't like how it's being run. Sometimes it's their favorite sports team instead, but the principle there is the same.

That's definitely true. Though my reason for wanting to buy the rights isn't because the franchise is being run into the ground, it's because nothing has been done with it since the 90s. I'd rather buy the rights and continue the series on my own volition, than have them sit in Scholastic's vast library of unused franchises until the end of time.

The distinction between "being run into the ground" and "not being run at all" is rather fine. The main difference I can find is that there's less time pressure in the latter case.

Also at least one non-body swap story that takes pointers from Groundhog Day?

Now were they straight up body swaps, or transformation swaps (like their bodies physically change or no)?
