If you're a non-artistic, yet casually, curious type, you may believe in the legend of being hit by visionary 'lightening', that will magically find itself as a masterwork on a canvas. Speaking from experience, though, whatever you think is racing through one's mind before the painting session, is typically very vague, and by itself is not 'visible' enough to flesh out a composition, thus there are a share of gaps to be filled (by unglamorous grunt-work) to paint a greater than myopic scene. The process of creative thinking is enhanced, or fortified, by a physical, hands-on approach, simply put, lab-work as opposed to 'plop the kids in front of a textbook'. It is thus relevant to recall the quote, "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration" and whatever message may arise from a work of art, may come later as a kind of after-thought, as opposed to a noble-sounding, yet realistically, undependable promise. When I begin a new canvas, my mind is typically void of what I will paint, unless I have some tangible reference.
