It was starting to get light outside. It was never this light so early in the morning. Makoto Niijima blinked, slowly lifting her head off the pillow where the shape of her head was etched. The night before, she remembered sipping coffee at Leblanc while she and Ren were studying. Then she had barely made the last train home, and she kept studying when she got home. Makoto squinted at the window.

Even through the sleepy fog, a sense of dread overtook her. Makoto groped through the shadows at her nightstand where her phone was charging. When she found her phone, she pressed the button on the side and peered at the time.
