There Are Some Things... by Moni3 There Are Some Things... by Moni3
There Are Some Things They Will Never Know; 18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas.

Completed July 2007.

"...Once they had purchased (the books), they took the books home, read and re-read them, cherished them, and then hid them behind the fridge, in shoe boxes in their closets, under mattresses. It was a life-changing event if a spouse, a parent, or even a child found the books and challenged the reader." -- foreword to the 2001 edition of "Odd Girl Out" by Ann Bannon

Good golly some pieces I fight with over and over and some take a few short minutes. This took me 4 days of painting 2-3 hour sessions, as opposed to the 10 weeks this one took me:
Neglect by Moni3

Although that one was 3 times the size of the one above.

Gifted to Ann Bannon.

"Done in a deliberately pulp style, this great painting captures wonderfully the subterfuge and excitement of the sexual awakening gay females experienced throughout the 20th century due to increasingly bold and eye opening literature. The housewife discovering herself on the kitchen floor, aware who who might discover her.. a priceless look and powerful image, humourous and empowering.. There's just something so humorous and yet unfortunately bitter in the truth of it. I just love this painting.

deserve this so much. Fantastic picture. Love the colours, lighting, expression.

I'm so proud of you hun.

To me the picture seems really cluttered, I like that you've captured a moment in time, alot of paintings on here are really set out, and posed. To me this is like a still from a film. Theres so much movement in it. Especially in the cat. It just goes to show that details aren't everything, its like how kids paint, everything fits in place and has meaning within the box that its painted.

well done again xxx

Thanks so much! I was thrilled, of course. I love this piece to bits and it goes to show me how freaked out I can get. I don't believe I actually painted it - it's very weird.

I'm so glad you got to see it. I love your comments, always.

Thanks! The DD was super cool, but it goes to show that those who feature traditional arts DD's have good taste. (Wow, I sound so arrogant saying that, but I really *really* like my painting here.)

Gotcha on the males, too. Gore Vidal used to write pulp under a different name. The more I get into pulp the more interesting it becomes.

Thanks so much for visiting and for the comments!!

Gotta love lesbian pulp.

It's really sad that I have to be like that even now. Even though I'm out to my parents, they still don't know how active I am in the GLBT community (as a writer and avid reader of queerfic, and hopefully the future co-pres of the GSA at my high school), and I'm sort of afraid of what will happen when they find out.

It's a good time to look back on this kind of fear in our history and realize we're not really that far behind it. The 1920's in Germany were quite a liberated time for a lot of people. The pendulum can swing right back. We should congratulate ourselves on how far we've come, but these kinds of reminders should be brought up to make sure we don't go back. Yeah, in some ways, the good old days sucked, but there are good reasons to remember them.

Thanks so much for commenting. And love the Kermit quote! :D

The author of the book in the woman's hands, Ann Bannon, describes what it was like to buy these books. Because they were pulp, I guess today's equivalent of a Harlequin or other trashy books, they were sold in bus stations, drug stores and such and the cashier always gave a knowing leer at folks buying the lurid and suggestively covered books - especially with 2 women looking at each other on them.

They were considered trash because of the subject, but some of them were very well-written. In a vacuum of literature and knowledge about what one's life might be like in making these realizations, it was all some women had. Some of them were gems - they still are.

Thanks again, ladycaasi. :D
