|The classic statement...|
Through no real choice of our own, we inherited them. Jake, Lynda, and Debbie.
Jake was one of J’s friends from the old days. He was a 1% outlaw biker who spent his last few years in prison. “Right charge, wrong offense” he jokingly told J. She would bet on sports with him, often losing on purpose, so his commissary account was in good stead. When he died in prison, J arranged for his ashes to be given to his mom.
Lynda was Jake’s mom. She moved away from Colorado after Jake died and went to live in Florida with her only surviving son. She died two months later. The son (Jake’s brother) decided he didn’t want to deal with either of their ashes - and so, J got involved again.
Debbie? Well, that goes way back as well. In fact, Debbie knew both J and I before we knew each other. She wore fancy dress at our medieval wedding ceremony (the 2nd wedding in a week for us - blame the families). She sung in operas with me and sat on the board, managed a children’s theater program yearly, and was a damn good friend to us both. J spent several months helping refurbish Debbie’s house, and Debbie let J sleep at the theater when she needed to sometimes.
When Debbie died, her only son decided that he couldn’t deal with it. He gave the ashes to us.
So, we inherited them and had to dispose of the bodies - because that’s the kind of friends we are.
We wanted to give them a proper send-off. I suggested that we get a 3-person water balloon catapult and fling them into the ocean. We figured Jake would laugh, and eventually Debbie and Lynda would have too.
Those damn things are really seasonal. I’m kind of glad that the slingshot we purchased as a backup really didn’t work.
We shared some words and memories, hopes and fears, and gave their ashes back to the ocean.
Tonight, we are drinking heavily. Steaks and potatoes are in the oven. A western has been selected (”The Professionals” starring Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Woody Strode, Robert Ryan, Jack Palance and Claudia Cardinale) because Jake and the boys he rode with always enjoyed a good western.
We keep our promises.
