Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. by MokkaQuill Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. by MokkaQuill
I AM SO PROUD OF THIS :'D You really don't know what you're truly capable of until something emotional hits you clean in the face. xD

-FANDOM STUFF-

I now have an OTP. Yeah. It happened. xD AleGenie all the way.

For anyone who doesn't know, this is Alex Drake and Gene Hunt from the British TV Series "Ashes To Ashes". It is one of my all time favourites and it fully destroyed me in the final episode. I was literally an emotional wreck for a good hour after I watched the final episode. And it's quite rare that happens to me THAT bad :'D I highly recommend watching it, but if you do, watch "Life On Mars" first, as "Ashes To Ashes" is the sequel.

Also, if you're gonna comment on the ending, please start your comment with "SPOILERS" so as not to ruin the end for people. Thank you.

-ART STUFF-

I painted the vast majority of this in Sai with just one brush on one layer, using an 1980's blue/red colour palette. It's a very fun way to paint! I then transfered over to photoshop to play with levels and light, add texture and also use a couple of texture brushes (I hope I didn't go overboard haha).

Please let me know what you think, cause this feels like a huge leap from my normal Pokemon doodles!

Are the titles references to David Bowie's songs?

Yes they are! The music ends up being a recurring theme and somewhat of a plot point in the series! :D

has a gorgeous watercolor feel. just wish the background was not abstract. I think any sort of landscape would realllllly push those faces. Beautiful nonetheless...

Well I like ashes to ashes because it's 80's related and Alex is very cool (and Shaz too ! And I miss Gene...) so I might finish for that, but I am just not ready for the feels as well ! T_T

=^u^=

But did you know that even tho BBC America aired Ashes to Ashes here a few years back but, it was never released on DVD here in the US?  I just happened to find it on Hulu again recently,  I was thrilled~  :la:

I think all we got was the brit version of Life on Mars,  the re-done US version that didn't do as well and had a really bizarre ending but it got a lot of Americans interested in the series.  Have you seen it or heard about it?

And we never got an American version of Ashes to Ashes but it probably would've sucked, mostly because of how the US Gene was written and casted.  Like him Alex wouldn't have had the same chemistry that makes Ashes so great.   And Gene is wayy sexier/badass in the UK version btw~  HE IS BEST CHARACTER AND PHILLIP GLENISTER WAS BORN TO PLAY HIM~

Our Gene is a crotchety, 60-something veteran NYPD cop in the US version but our Sam is less of an ass than the brit one, imo.  XD   Also our Annie is blonde but her story is the same and our Ray has the same attitude/ blatant sexism he's always had. I don't even remember the US Chris,  but Sam's family is the same and there's the black cop guy who's one of his Sam's friends.   So it's pretty much the same story up till the ending it just takes place in New York city.

You're welcome!  ^u^

I found it a while ago: I got 10 minutes in to the US version and had to stop I am so sorry xD It just felt like an entirely different show, and it was probably mainly due to the absence of Phillip Glenister. Cause he made it x3
But I think adaptions are never gonna be as good as originals, and that works both ways (There are a lot of American shows I hope never get a British adaption haha)

And I didn't realise you never got the DVD! That happens a lot over here with American shows: ever heard of OUAT? We never even got shown beyond the second season on TV, let alone DVD :'D Yaaaaaay internet I swear by you haha

No prob, I understand completely! XD

It's just not the same without Phillip because he really is what makes the series great. Otherwise the series would've been just another forgettable cop/crime drama...

Oh, you mean Once upon a Time? A British adaptation might have worked but, the fact that it takes place in the US with European fairy tale characters makes it kinda unique.

And with Downton Abbey they can't adapt it being a period drama. Same goes for Hell on Wheels since it's a period western.

That sucks that they never released the other seasons of OUaT (and the spinoffs) on DVD tho...

Personally, I'm not into the series but, it's SUPER popular both here and abroad. So, I'm suprised they never did... more like they're allergic to making money. XD

This is a nice one. It has a few flaws to it but for the most part like you said it is a step up from the Pokemon pieces. What I particularly like about this one is the hair you painted in. The way it's subtle yet still defines forms and shadow is a great implementation there. The colors on the face as well are quite good. What I notice to be off immediately is the man on the rights neck area. There is this hard edge where the warmth and reds of his face meet the blue cool shadows. Try to make that a bit more of a softer transition as right now it looks sunken into his body. Great job on this one but you may have gone a tiny bit overboard with the texture brushes. It's not necessarily bad but it's a bit much for my tastes. Try finding a good medium that accents certain areas you want to bring attention to.

Thanks for the constructive criticism! And yes. I thought I might have overdone it with the texture brushes >.< I'll try and tone it down a bit next time :D

I truly love your airbrushing realistic technique, way to go on the brush smudging technique and Photoshop love the way you give there every realistic detail in your own design.
