In USA English slang, there's a phrase, "Apply the Golden Screwdriver," and "Let the smoke out of the transistors" when an electronic repair results in catastrophic failure! :(

The smoke makes electronics do it's thing, as long as it doesn't get released ;P

I assume the other saying means what I know as the golden hammer ;)

One of my very light weight radios got pulled to the ground by its heavy power cord, when I accidently wrapped it around my hand. Worked fine for three weeks, then stopped with a crackle and a wisp of smoke. One of my friends said he could probably fix the broken circuit board... :(
