Description
Naxos Station was a colonial mining outpost owned by the Rothan government from 2091 to 2112. The station was built into the Naxos Asteroid of the Calphous Belt, a rocky ring surrounding the 'hot Neptune' gas giant Calphous, the innermost planet of the Kelitian Iripo System. Leased from the Kelit, Naxos was rich in palladium, widely used in electronics and cold fusion reactors.
Naxos Station was a multi-stage facility initiated in 2091, with the first miners assembling the living and control quarters before connecting a tether to a captured and far smaller asteroid to act as a counterweight and hangar bay. Once this stage was completed, a large thruster module was installed on the opposite pole and a borehole drilled through the rock to allow connecting cables to be threaded. Additional thruster units were built around the surface of the asteroid, granting station operators the ability to move and control the asteroid if necessary.
With control established preliminary mining operations began, drilling down through the asteroid core until the thruster module was met, at which point the rest of the station was built until a single, uninterrupted unit existed through the centre of the rock. The bulk of mining operations then shifted to and spread from the centre of the rock into multiple shafts. A large variation of a starship dimensional drive core was included to induce artificial gravity within the station, orientated down toward the primary thrusters. Naxos Station was operated by approximately 150 personnel and a variety of automated mining machines.
The outpost is best known for the 'Naxos Event' of January 2112 and the source of NUE-1.
