For this new event, we will make an enormous background vector as one large group project. The general idea is that the image will be divided into separate areas/pieces, and group members can sign up to trace any of those pieces, which will then be combined to form one complete trace of the background.
If this proves to be popular we can make many more and really accomplish a lot together.
We will break it down in to different parts like this: i.minus.com/iHJT5QejbqppV.png (original image: i.minus.com/iPpDvqR8GNJAs.png )
The exact number of areas we use is subject to change depending on how members want to do it.
Before we begin, however, we need to find the best landscape images to choose from. Instead of picking one for you, we would like for you to suggest a background for us to vector, and anyone can submit or vote on these in the comments. You don't need to list the different sections people should be able to choose from, but keep in mind that it has to be divisible to work.
How to participate:
This project will be in Inkscape ONLY. Anyone can download and use Inkscape regardless of if they have any money or if they're on a less popular operating system, because it is free and supported on Windows, Mac and Linux. It is the most able to handle this type of large project, and the SVG file it produces is by far the most usable for everyone. The quality of the export it produces will also be higher than that from other programs. It can be opened in any modern web browser and opened by anyone in Inkscape. Although Illustrator can produce SVG files, these often have rendering glitches, rasterized objects and gradients, and missing data such as layers, and they can't be reliably opened and edited outside of Illustrator. If you've already made vectors in Illustrator or Photoshop the process is very similar, so please check out a basic tutorial to learn the tools and interface, and then you can be involved too!
Everyone who would like to contribute to the vector has to be checked out by us to make sure you're qualified for it, first. You probably do if you are already a group member, but if you are a very old member who's been inactive your work might have too many issues. There will be a time limit on this project so that it doesn't drag on for weeks without the result. Each part of the image should take less than a day to vector on its own, so you must be able to begin within a week of the decision for which background to use, and finished no more than two weeks after that (a total of three weeks to make it). This time frame might be adjusted if it doesn't fit our schedules well, but that is the goal for the time being.
To vote on background submissions:
Reply to entries in the comments with a "+1" to start your message, that is the only thing we need. Anyone can vote, and you can vote on as many submissions as you like. Comments about what you think about them would be great.
To create a background submission:
Comment with the screenshot, if possible from the 1080p version of the show. Include a short description, the time stamp, and which episode it is from. Submissions should look like this: comments.deviantart.com/1/2990…
If you're a member please say so and post an example of your work if you would like to participate in the project. From this we can decide if your quality meets the requirement, making the project consistently show-accurate. If you aren't a member but say you are anyway we will hide your comment and your vote will be removed, so please don't.
We will tally up the number of +1s and members who support each image, use this to determine each one's popularity, and take it from there. If several come out on top and many members want to join up, we can do more than one image at a time.
To begin, members who have signed up for parts of the image will have to open the high quality copy we will post after the decision is made, with Inkscape's 'Open file' menu under 'File' in the menu bar. This will set the canvas size to the reference image's dimensions, and allow us to put them together correctly. When you are finished, submit your portion of the image in SVG format to DeviantArt to show us what you've done, and post a comment on the journal post. When all the parts are finished (after the 3 weeks) they will be put together and uploaded using a new account made just for this purpose, with links in the description to the original parts. Project contributors should link to the full image as well.
If there is any interest in point donation as awards for those who take part, please say so, and maybe we can work something out. The way we go about this project will depend heavily on your feedback.

Update: We've seen a lot of interest in this project so far! With the current number of participants, we can make about 3 backgrounds at a time (~10 parts per image). This is sure going to be fun to coordinate
Reddit post here. We also made an appearance in Equestria Daily's Nightly Roundup #304!
