Splicing is something I am slowly getting into, mermaids, fairies, and now a centaur. If I thought mermaids were hard, Centaurs are a pain in the ass. You have to find just the right model and just the right horse, you have to make sure the proportions work, then worry about blending and such. I am very happy with the end results. I even experimented some more with lighting and post production, though I don’t quite have the hang of it I don’t think (Those pretty highlights that people are doing on the edges). If anybody reads this description, would you please give some pointers on those highlights?

There are some things I am happier about in this picture than others, I am getting better at hair and rebuilding things that have a straight edge. I added some highlights to the rocks that weren’t there before, and I used a technique or two I hadn’t tried before. The splashes were something new to me. I probably would have left it without the splashes, but I experimented with screening (I use it a lot but not for stuff like that), and I thought it just looked better than leaving it as it was. : )

This was done all in paint shop pro 8 – I am wanting to learn photoshop but feel overwhelmed every time I open it.

This is really actually pretty good. And I can imagine the making of the centaur must have been quite a chalenge, because you had to make it look like the model and the horse part is mocing with the musscles of one being.

Your over all belnding is done very well also and don't really see anything wrong with the BG.

The only advise I can give is with the model itself. (please note that this is my personal opinion and you do NOT have to take it to heart.) I think you could've made the transition on the torso between human and horse a bit smoother. I mean you already did a great job, I just think if you made it fade into each other it might have looked a bit better. you could even draw in some fine hairs as the transition goes upwards.

And the only other thing I could say you could work on a bit is the hair. I know it's very difficult drawing hair, and you did awesome. But the picture plasys of at the sea side and the wind is blowing and she definately got wet already, so you could make a bit more stringy if you know what I mean. Like instead of it being one big mass blowing to the side, the mass could extend to some strings also. If I were you I would leave the hair as it is now, and just add some and make it longer and more stringy.

And that's about all I have to say.

Sorry if I don't always say things clearly (please ask if I said something you don't get) but I see in pictures and it's hard to translate them into words. Lol

Yeah, I thought there was something off about the transition, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Thank you for pointing that out for me :). As for the hair, that will forever be the bane of my existence lol. It is more challenging to do hair in paint shop pro because they don't have a function that works with the pressure of the stylus on my tablet like Photoshop, and I know nothing about the latter. I will dink around with it, nevertheless, and thanks so much for the advice!

Oh yes I understand what you mean with the paintshop pro. Well I would recommend you give Photoshop a try, it's really worth it.

I just want to say thank you for your positive response towards my critique, it's so refreshing to have somebody welcome constructive critisism.

keep doing what your doing!!

What I really love about this piece is the color scheme. The splashes look natural and, overall, the background looks fine. Could have reduced the opacity of the Outer Glow of the castle and worked a little more on the birds but beside that it is all right. I love fauns, and this one looks fantastic! The hair looks unfinished but I guess that's because I like long hair. She really has the look of a warrior, congratulations, this came out as expected. Overall I like it, a little more work on the lighting, shadows and the birds from the background and there you go! I'll watch your dA account, hope to see new works from you!

Thank you. I see what you mean about the outer glow, will dink around and try to fix it. The hair looks funky because paint shop pro isn't ideal for building it, but I will continue to experiment to get it right, dab nabbit. Thanks so much for the watch and for the critique.
