design by me; actual carving, outlining, gutting, etc. done by me and
This took us an estimate of around four hours, and in spite of our expectations, did not require any support toothpicks.
I wanted to do something scary, elaborate, different, and representative of me at the same time. I think This really fits all of those criteria, especially since it's a scorpion, a native animal in my hometown of Tucson, Arizona. When we started, the pumpkin was too thick for us to work with, especially with all the small parts on the legs, so we had to scrape out the sides for a half an hour until they were thinner. We used a total of four different knives, since we broke one and we had to use at least two types of knives on each hole to get each to go all the way through the pumpkin. We ended up breaking one of them (luckily, it was the kind of knife that we break at least one of every year anyway).
