The name iris refers to one of the most abundant kind of flowering plants in the Iridaceae family. There are currently around 300 species in the Iris genus.

The roots are purgative. Pounded roots are used as an ointment for some skin conditions while root infusions are used against some liver disorders.
Root tea can be used as a treatment for stomach pain, gastric problems, and kidney and bladder disorders.
