STORY

(Winchester)
He had been here before. The big red stallion looked around at the rows of blue/grey barns and breathed in the warm air thick with horse smells. His groom, Ty snapped the lead on his halter and lead him out of the dark of trailer. Winchester was tired of travel. Standing in a plane, standing in a trailer. Always a new place. He tossed his head and danced down the ramp, eager to move. Eager to run. He knew his job, and he loved it. "Easy, big boy," Ty said with his deep voice. "You'll get your chance soon enough." They walked around for a little so they could stretch though, then headed over to their space. The stallion snorted as they walked into his stall, home for the next while. Ty offered him a peppermint as solace. Winchester slobbered it out of his hand, then nudged the big man's pockets for another. "Dinner time is a-comin' Red! I'd tell ya to hold your horses, but well, ya know... You kind of are one," he chuckled.

(Ty)
So many amazing horses! When he wasn't caring for his favourite big red stallion, Ty enjoyed watching some of the other arrivals. Several prestigious farms had a string of horses that qualified. Fox Harbor Farm of Kentucky had brought Triton and Takenshi - two stallions Ty had huge respect for. Takenshi was one of Winchester's competition for the Turf. Red Star Stables "Hot Shot" was an incredible stallion who had big presence and and an impressive record. A son of Winchester was racing in the Juvenile - will be fun to see how he does, Ty mused. The big man sat around with some of the other grooms one balmy afternoon watching the training and talking smack about each other's charges. It was all in good fun though. It was a tough life full of uncertainty, but they loved their jobs, and their horses and wouldn't have it any other way.

(Bobby)
Bobby was glad to have the opportunity to follow the big red stallion to California for the Breeders' Cup. He hadn't told most people, but he was retiring and was hoping to go out on a great mount in a great race - and hopefully with a great win! He was an "old man" for a jockey and while he took good care of himself, the years, spills and hard work had taken their toll. His wife was excited that he would be home instead of traveling as much as he had over the years. Sir Charles had offered him the chance to come on as a trainer, which would allow him to stay connected with his passion - the race horse.

He and Charles talked strategy over the weeks leading up to the Breeders' Cup. Winchester was running great - even being a little feisty under saddle during the workouts. He wanted to take on the competition! "Hold that thought, man. Just a few more days and we are going to take them all on! Your going to be a star, ok. Trust me." Bobby patted the big stallion's neck with admiration after an especially great work out. "God, you are an amazing animal, Winn!"

(Sir Charles)
This was their big event of the year. Winchester had been running great, but this was the big leagues. Did the stallion have what it took to stand up to the incredible international field? They wouldn't know until the moment if truth. In the mean time, they would continue to work to keep the colt in top form. Bobby was guiding him in some great workouts, and Ty was watching over the colt like he was royalty.

The days flew by until the final moment had come. The fluffy clouds floated just over the mountain backdrop. Charles gave the old jockey his final leg up, and their eyes met for a still moment after the reins were gathered and stirrups adjusted. No words now about this being the jockey's final run or their years together. "Thank you, sir." Bobby said, more depth to his word than just the simple assistance of the previous moment.

Charles nodded in understanding. "Well, this is it. Have a great ride!"

"Fingers crossed for a lucky one too!"

"Absolutely!"

Sir Charles made his way to his box. Mae had flown in and she was a vision dressed in beautiful royal blue dress for the occasion, but nervously twisting her program. Winchester danced out in the line up with the others. "He lookes great!" Mae smiled up at her husband. He smiled down and squeezed her hand. A few minutes later, all were ready. The bell rang, and the horses sprang down the turf hill towards the main track.

This never appeared in my inbox, dA y u do dis :stare: I was confused by seeing so many extras thumbnails but no actual entry xD

As you may have heard, the background here looks excellent :giggle: Lots of detail and very natural colors. Lots of detail in the subjects too, what size is this? Working lettering and symbols into the saddle cloths would have been incredibly difficult for me I think :faint:

Silly DA! ;) The drawing itself is 9" x 6" (approx. 23 x 15 cm) - had to keep my pencils very sharp! The lettering was done with the white gel pen. Turns out the gel ink slightly resists my polychromos pencils, which helps keep crisper white details.

Thank you! :) I haven't had the chance to do a lot of competitions this year, so I wanted to make the most of this for my fav racing stallion! Definitely had to work in bursts and take it a section at a time to build up the details without going crazy. ;)

Thank you! I haven't gotten into that many races/events this year so it felt good to get back into my art and go all out for a change.

Thank you! The background ended up fairly different from my first thought, but pretty pleased still. Just worked in little sections front to back (like layers) after I finished the main characters. Unfortunately some of the fine detail gets muddied in the final image (like the downhill part of the course in the back and the people in the infield) but it was worth it. :D

It looks like that technique worked well! That tends to happen though, detail tends to get meddled the more an image is completed. (Thought I can say that the downhill course is barely noticeable at Santa Anita in real life, so your drawing isn't that far off!)
