My Tracks of an Oak Killer illustration was published on the cover of the USDA Forest Service's Proceedings of the Sudden Oak Death Fifth Science Symposium! See it here: www.fs.fed.us/psw/publications…

Also, I've been published in Scientific American! I illustrated 3 bees to appear on an infographic, which you can view here: www.scientificamerican.com/art… or look for it on pg 88 of the Dec 2013 issue!

Also, I've joined the Medical Illustration Sourcebook, where you can see more portfolio works by me here: medillsb.com/ArtistPortfolioTh…

Science Notes 2012 has finally been published online, which features my oak tree illustration missnysha.deviantart.com/art/T… and others by my classmates in the Science Illustration program. Each of us had the task of illustrating the stories for students in the Science Writing program.

The opening reception for my class's exhibit, "Illustrating Nature", went very well!

To prepare for the opening I created a new portfolio website that you can check out here: www.jillianwalters.com Enjoy!

And a reminder about the exhibit:

"Illustrating Nature", featuring works by me and my 14 classmates of this year's CSUMB's Scientific Illustration graduate program, will be at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History (Pacific Grove, CA) starting April 27th! Opening reception will be 5-7pm that day, and the exhibit will last until June. I'm also volunteering to do a demo there too. :D There will be 2-5 pieces from each student, specifically chosen from the 4 instructors to show some of our strongest and most varied pieces. The pieces of mine that have been chosen to be in the exhibit include:

1. Illustrating a Specimen: missnysha.deviantart.com/art/I… (watercolor)  <-As seen on the poster!
2. Giants of Big Sur: missnysha.deviantart.com/art/S… (photoshop)
3. Missed One...!: missnysha.deviantart.com/art/M… (acrylic)
4. Peculiar Pollination: missnysha.deviantart.com/art/P… (photoshop)
5. Heron heads: missnysha.deviantart.com/art/A… (pen & ink, photoshop colored)

If any of you are in the area, feel free to stop by to see me there and/or my works in person! :D

I've finally decided that with all the requests for tutorials on skin, cloth, etc and still lots of questions on my Hair Tutorial, it's efficient to share a psd encompassing all of it and more - now you guys have an example of how much I put into vector mask painting! :D Enjoy a psd of a close-up of Saitou from my Vindicator wall:

So because many people still ask me about it, or continue to have issues getting it to work correctly, I've finally made a general tutorial on vector mask painting! missnysha.deviantart.com/art/V…

Hopefully it should clarify some of the finer details about it! Feel free to continue asking questions if you have any. :)

Enjoy!

Just heard news from my brother that his wife is pregnant!! I'm excited, and don't really care whether it's a boy or girl. Hope it all goes well - currently only at 6 weeks now, but anything could happen.

And also another strange thing I've noticed here on deviant art: on some of your deviations, the comments and/or favs are stripped clean. (reduced back to 0/0) Anyone know why this is? O.o

Edit: It's been fixed!

*Disclaimer* I wrote this out of fun to give others who couldn't play the game a taste of what they missed, and to give another opinion for those who have already played the game.

Finally beat Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep!! And wow, it was incredible… Since I’m new to the PSP I’m really quite impressed how they could squeeze all that data onto such a tiny UMD, and how the psp could handle such graphics and button commands wrapped together in one tiny package haha. After completing all 3 characters’ stories on proud mode, completing the final episode, and unlocking the secret movie (which was beautiful :iconcryforeverplz:), I really don’t know where I should begin on my endgame commentary. No direct major plot spoilers will be mentioned, only barely hinted at in the song titles and stuff, so rest assured.

Well, I think I’ll comment on the music at least. …I LOVED it!! Yoko Shimomura did an incredible job this time: I don’t think any KH game thus far has had such heart wrenching and insanely epic compositions such as some of the ones in this game. I was impressed. The music in this game does have a different feel than the other games, particularly prominent with intricate violin solos and extremely fast and desperate boss themes. I’ve read comments that the music sounds Star Wars-esque due to the orchestral feel, choir vocals, and gorgeous sound quality. And well, I somewhat agree because the music in this game is often so epic and triumphant, perfectly complementing the emotional intensity of scenes and major battles. It was such a fan treat recognizing remixed themes from KH1 and 2, but some of the newest tracks I loved to death and instantly wanted on my playlist.

A handful of my personal favorites (no order):

Rage Awakened (Terra’s final boss theme) www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXK3pf…
I squealed when I first heard this, because I instantly recognized it from the KH2 Final Mix secret boss theme. However, for the epic battle it’s played for, this version has much more urgency, desperation, tragedy, and silent rage considering the scenes that had just transpired and what you need to do to defeat this aggressive boss. I absolutely love how the song builds to the climax.  *____* It booms along with the meteors bombarding towards you, for one thing. As usual, the song features the epic violin solos.

Unversed Boss 1 (Wheel Master) www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXDt37…
Now this one was a surprise. For the first boss theme in Terra’s story, it caught me off guard because it was so fast and different from typical KH music. (Some other people describe it as DDR-esque.) At first I was like, “this is strange…wha-huh? WHOA!!” The way the particular bosses moved and twitched made it seem like they were dancing along, and the super fast beat really got you pumped to fend for your life. It was only used on some unique bosses though, and I wish it were used more, because it became an addicting battle song (luckily it was used again in the Mirage Arena!). I hope future KH games use this one again too! And of course, there’s the violin solos!

Aqua’s Theme www.youtube.com/watch?v=yswWz4…
Oh man, this slow violin song is so tragic and beautiful. Used in tender, remorseful, and reminiscent scenes, the emotions conveyed really hit you like a truck. Oh Aqua you’re a trooper! :iconcryforeverplz:

Terra’s Theme www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCUMID…
I first heard bits of this in the game trailer, and liked it since then, wondering what this new song was all about. Well no surprise - it’s Terra’s theme! It’s epic and powerful (violin again!), insinuating a great adventure to come, but with some anxiety and uncertainty that darkness still lingers. When this track was used for a major boss battle, I was rendered speechless.

Fragments of Sorrow (The FINAL final boss theme) www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvYrsX…
An epic and intense remix of the same song from previous games. Full of vocals, that epic violin again, and an overbearing atmosphere (probably one of the more Star Wars-esque songs). Some of the bg violin parts near the end reminded me of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue and I had to do a double take! By the time you reach this stage and after all that you’ve been through and fought so far, I was impressed Aqua was so sane considering what she had done and still had to do. O_o What willpower and bravery! Go Aqua!

Mysterious Figure (The Hardest Secret Boss Theme) www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkHefp…
Although I have not fought him (nor do I want to – that's pretty much suicide), just listening to this song is just… :iconwthplz: Intensity and crazy violin to the max!! Quite fitting for a guy who has no mercy – seriously, just youtube some gameplay videos of people getting slaughtered by him. (Or getting thumb workouts by mashing square constantly to be temporarily invincible to his attacks as you dodge roll for dear life waiting for a split second pause to strike him back.) The song itself sounds draining; just imagine trying to survive against this guy…

And well I could keep going (like Vanitas’s theme and the new Dearly Beloved), but that would make this entry too long…

Some overall game favs of mine:

Most abused commands:
Mega Flare
Mine Square
Meteor (Terra)
Faith (Ven)
Seeker Mine (Aqua)
Firaga Burst (Aqua)
Thundaga Shot (Aqua)

Fav Command Styles:
Bladecharge (Terra and Aqua – makes them wield a giant light sword like twice their body length. Totally awesome when Aqua uses it!)
Wingblade (Ven – has 6 light swords like wings on his back that are used to attack along with the one he holds in his hand – very powerful and cool sounding)

Fav playable character: Aqua, because she felt the easiest to use for me, was very strong (physically as well!), I preferred her barrier defense to the guy’s guard blocks (hers was pretty much like reflect from KH2), and she changed command styles easily.

After completing this game, Sora has a big job ahead of him for a KH3, if there will ever be one!

  • Playing: KH Birth by Sleep (PSP)
Just got the game! It's great so far! Been playing it on Proud mode so it was a little tricky at first, but I'm getting the hang of it and so far it's really fun (and pretty *__*)! I've kept away from spoilers so I look forward to it being a blast like many people have said!

For those of you who have not seen the controversial article about clients hiring artists yet, you must take a look: kaitol.com/how-to-hire-an-arti… you are a fellow artist, inform yourself of the types of clients and traps you must avoid in the art world!

But there is a ray of hope! One of the best responses to that article (by a much more seasoned professional!) is here: www.thejonjones.com/2010/08/09… Proving that there is still humanity in the capitalist world. Enjoy! :D

I've noticed some peculiar patterns on dA for quite some time…

I have my share of watchers and get new ones all the time (thank you!), yet almost no one is noticing the new deviations I've been posting for a while now, especially in comparison to how it was in the past (like during version 5).
Why is this? Is it happening to you too? I'm really curious to investigate this. One reason might be that it's somewhat related to the new layout and coding of the site.

For one, new deviations are displayed on a separate page from the popular ones on the homepage, and if my hunch is correct, most people don't really bother looking at the new deviations because they'd rather look at the newest popular art. So basically only the previously "popular" artists will stay popular, while newer shining gem artists and their artwork are virtually ignored. My evidence: back in version 5 the newest deviations were displayed in a row above the popular art row, giving them a greater chance to be noticed. And they did, because my original Bamboo Zen piece got about 5000 views in several minutes. That's strikingly different from the crawling activity of today, where people are lucky if someone even chances upon their work.

But then what about all their watchers? Again this might be from the new layout and coding. You know all those popular art groups? If you've joined any you'd notice you'd get about 200-500 deviations daily. After a while you'd get tired of all those messages and just purge your inbox. Unfortunately you may also miss the deviations from the people you really want to watch. Therefore I recommend setting your deviations to "grid" and "stacks ON", so that all deviations from a particular artist or group are packaged together for easy organized viewing. And so that the deviations from artists you want to see are not lost from view among the countless other ones from groups.

Otherwise, if it's not an issue of not being seen or getting lost in deviation messages, perhaps the lack of activity is because there aren't the types of deviations you want to see in your inbox, and thus just a lack of interest. If so, what would you like to see? More digital art, more walls, more tutorials? I've noticed the quick digital tree I painted got a lot more views/comments than various others, so that is a hint for me. So I ask you: if you are one of my watchers, what kind of art are you watching me for and want to see more of?  Do you also agree or disagree with this dA trend I've observed as well? Personally I think the past dA had a lot more equal opportunity for budding artists. I'm quite curious what you think.

Well I've been back from my trip, and some of you've already noticed because of the photos I've already uploaded.
It was a bus trip lasting 2 weeks - starting in Kansas, then through Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. So yep I saw Mt Rushmore (very underwhelming) Yellowstone, and Grand Teton National Park, among various other stops. Saw lots of wildlife and awesome scenery! But I wish we could've stayed longer in Wyoming to hike around and take more pics! Guess that means a future trip sometime. :)

Well just graduated from college! Hasn't really hit me yet but having no more school definitely feels weird. >.<
And of course now that means I have to search for a job!! Gyaa!! Cause yep, currently unemployed.

I have thought about the graduate program for scientific illustration scienceillustration.org/ for future options. But as of now, I'd appreciate any help or recommendations with jobs! :D Art, research, environmental biology, animals, etc to name a few interests...

Thank you all for visiting after seeing my work on the new Lifehacker article. lifehacker.com/5515403/bisigi-…
Yes, my work was asked for permission to use many years ago for this project, and the designer credits me on his page and keeps my signature (website) intact on the wall. So thank you all for your support, I'm glad you like my bamboo design!

If you want a larger or print sized version, the original cannot be enlarged (it was rasterized at that size to fit on my laptop), however I have recently made a remixed version for those who want something to hang on their wall. Check it out: missnysha.deviantart.com/art/B… Enjoy. :D

I've always wanted a bigger and better monitor since I've been using my 1280x800 laptop all this time. I felt the tiny screen made working on large Photoshop documents quite difficult and I was ready for a change. Well, after kindly receiving some xmas money from my family, it was just enough to shop for a monitor! We actually went to the store and tested my laptop on various ones on display. XD Now I have a brand new LG 23'' wide "canvas" hooked up to my laptop! Originally I was disappointed that the standard aspect ratio for monitors nowadays is the super wide HD 16:9 - I wanted 16:10, the same as my laptop!! The existing 16:10 monitors online are so expensive! However after setting it up and using it for a while I'm falling more in love with it - it's so big, bright, and colorful compared to my laptop's screen. Well, I guess this means expect some 1920x1080 sized works from now on. ;)
