This tutorial was published in the first issue of Squish Magazine! [link]

This thing is HUGE!! Took me 3 days to put together - it consists of about everything I know about vectoring and the pen tool. Gosh I feel like I wrote a term paper. @__@

Please ask questions if you're confused! There is a ton of info!

Please DO NOT redistribute to any other sites.

Outline of info covered:

-What is a Vector
Difference between vectors and rasters
-What is a Vexel

-Intro to the vectoring tools in Photoshop
-Pen tool modes
Shape layers and Paths

-How to draw with the Pen tool
Edit: alt can also be pressed while you are dragging with the pen tool to change the angle of the unconnected handle bar all in one motion. (for when you are at step 3, so some may find step 5 an extra step, but for simple explaining purposes I'm keeping what I have)
-Editing the pen tool shape
-Editing relationships among multiple shapes in a single layer
-Layer Styles
Gradient overlays

-Vectoring lineart
-Vectoring shades (cell shading)
Edit: Some people use clipping masks, but I don't so I didn't mention them here. You can use whatever method makes shading easier for you. :D
-Troubleshooting tips
When curves aren't smooth
When curves are too sharp and jagged

-Applications of the Paths mode
Typing on paths
Stroking paths with brushes
Marquee selection from a path

-Vector Masking
Extracting Stock
Painting in vector masks

Edit2: Wow! Thanks so much for the DD!! :3

I keep looking through the tools on my version of Photoshop, but I can't find the vectoring tools anywhere. I have Photoshop Elements 8. That isn't the right version, is it?

Elements??? Sorry, this was written for the full version of Photoshop. I haven't used Elements, so I don't know what it looks like, but you should be looking for the pen tool or text tools.

Lol, even though it says my name and site at the top of it? XD

You're welcome! Lots of people have issues learning to vector, so I made a guide based on what I learned myself. :3 Glad you find it useful! :D

A little confusing because I haven't tried vector masks, but I'm very familiar with the pen tool so hopefully once I try both with this is a guide it will make sense to me. I really look forward to experimenting with this stuff, thanks for this!

I think I may just be a little slow. I've read both and it's still not clicking with me. I'll keep trying, of course, but maybe I'm just not meant to understand vectoring things.

Hmm I tried to explain it as clearly as I could in the vmp tutorial... What part(s) are you having trouble with?

Well at the moment I was testing out using the shape function of the pen tool to do line art. I personally try to keep as little layers as possible and in this guide it mentioned that you can draw as many shapes on one layer as you wanted, but every time I start a new shape it also decides to make a new layer... so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong, or if I misunderstood.

I haven't tried anything else yet, and I'll probably understand it once I try it. When it comes to something art related I'm not a very good visual learner so it's not your fault; the guide is very easy to follow while I'm putting the tips to use and reading at the same time.

Aha, I know what you're doing wrong. Make sure you click on the "add to shape area (+)" box after you finish a shape to add more shapes to that layer. In shapes mode, it defaults to the "create new shape layer" box when you complete shapes. So just make sure you click on the "add" one before you start making shapes again, or else you'll get a useless amount of extra layers.

I think it might be my tablet, because this time I did it with a mouse and it worked fine.

When I was working with my tablet, even if I had the "add" box selected it would still make a new layer anyway, so I spent quite a lot of time deleting the extra layers, clicking the add box again, and watching it automatically switch to the default box as soon as I made a new point and then make a new layer.

Thank you for confirming that was the right way to do it though, I was really starting to think I had read something wrong.

You're welcome. :)
Hmm that's interesting. Normally it's not supposed to switch back. I use both my tablet and mouse (actually it's a trackman). Also make sure your vector mask thumbnail (to the right of the layer/shape color thumbnail) is selected first before clicking to draw too.

EHHH? I have cs4 too, but not cs3. (I prefer the look and feel of cs2 MUCH more, so I use it instead)
How is it not working? Photoshop shouldn't change how its major tools work... @.@

lol maybe its just me :P well i noticed from cs 1 to cs 3 the grouping is diff XD like in cs 1 when u group a layer u can only color inside that colored layer that u made a group in... if that makes sense :/ it not like that in cs 3 XD I skipped CS 2

I just tested it in my cs4. It's exactly the same as cs2.
Cs3 should be the same too. Keep trying it out, or give me a screenshot showing what you did and what you can't do.
