She can see the unseen, and her Tolkien illustrations are truly unique, with their own beauty standards and symbolics. Today I bring you an interview with a spanish artist Maria Lombide Ezpeleta, or :iconmarisoly: - marisoly

1. For the beginning, could you tell us something about yourself?

Im nobody, coming from nowhere and going towards nothing…

I have always felt that, it´s my weakness and strength.

2. When did you read Tolkien's books for the first time, and what impression did they leave in you?

They were read to me in loud, before I could read myself. I was impressed by Meeting Gildor Inglorion, Glorfindel at the Bridge and Elwe meets Melian. These scenes still bring tears into my eyes.

3. How extensive is your knowledge of Middle-earth?

Oh…how extensive can it be…?  Compared to experts, I probably know nothing;  I have read the Tolkien books, some articles and also some Middle Earth legends.

Do you consider yourself Tolkien nerd?

Newer asked myself that question.

4. When the movies came out, many of the inner pictures of characters and scenes in the mind of the readers have been replaced by actors and settings from the movie.
Did it happen to you as well?

No, but some actors and scenes are better than what I have in my mind

Did you try to prevent it?

No.

5. Now, could you tell us something about you and art?
Are you a professional artist, or is art just your hobby?

I think I need to paint more than I need food

When did you start doing it, and who or what influenced your style?

I started before I could walk, but I was not allowed to do “strange” drawings, so I didn’t until I was big enough to defend myself… I paint what comes to me, and also what I have seen and what I remember.

6. How do you choose which scenes and characters to illustrate?

I don´t. They choose me.

7. What art technique is your favourite?

I use coloured pencils for comfort, but I like oil painting and some other techniques too.

Do you rather keep to the art techniques and styles you are familiar with, or do you experiment with new ones as well?

Sometimes I do experiment.

8. Your art is unique and has its own standards of beauty.
Your Elves have exotic, almost alien features and skin color, the characters are often depicted in unusual or distorted positions, you use elements that are modern, or characteristic for egyptian and eastern mythologies. Can you tell us something about the evolution of this complex style?

I try to do it as they appear to me – but there is a lot  that can´t be interpreted in images. They think, feel , perceive and act  differently to humans´. When I look at some ancient art,  images come to me, feel familiar, I know about them…

8. Do you have some tips and tricks you would like to share with the other artists?

Oh, maybe to enjoy what you paint,  and if you dislike some parts of a pic, then turn it into something that you do like.

9. Could you give us a link or thumbnail from your deviantart gallery of

- a Tolkien illustration you are most proud of?

I never feel proud, but I like elven, therefore I like most of their pictures This, for instance:

Sprite with ring... but he has a long story

Marisoly - Sprite With Ring by MirachRavaia

I was working on another pic with this fairy in it. After work I was writing a letter when my right hand ring started to fade off and vanish. I could still feel the ring touching it, but after half a minute or so it was gone. I woke up several times that night and saw the fairy at my bed, showing me the ring like in this pic. Next day I kept on working and thought 'Well if the Fairy wants my ring I´ll draw it on him' I started to draw and after a while we heard something explode in the kitchen. My sister went out there and said: A bowl jumped up from the dish shell.  I kept on drawing. After a while my sister came back.- The Fairy has returned your ring. It was inside the bowl

10. You don't administrate your deviantart gallery yourself. Do you still read the comments on your pictures?

Oh, I would read them if I could. But… or I cant get into Deviantart, or it mucks up and I can´t see the pics or where to answer or computer blocks and I have to restart.

Maybe someone here knows a solution…?

(technical details: she has Windows 7, and tried Mozilla and IE, the problem only happens with dA)

If people like your art, where is the best place to tell you?

Main page  has place to comment or maybe gallery can be made to accept comments… Elfwood takes comments… and if there is a way to make Deviant art to work…?

11. What key people in your life, (on or off of dA) have been inspirations to you, or has supported you, as an artist?

All artists inspire me in one way or another

You can also tell us why, if you want.

The beauty or/and feeling of their art

12. Is there something else you would like to tell to the fans of Tolkien and your art?

A painting of  the others” is just a poor attempt to catch the uncatchable, they move, sound and act differently and they have more senses, other senses…

Thank you for your time and answers, it was really an interesting talk!
