Character design checklist:
If you're going to try drawing your character, you need to come up with a design that is both recognizable and a pleasure to look at. Some movies have simply fallen flat due to poor character design. A well-designed character is:

• Immediately recognizable and relatable
• Has a recognizable shape or silhouette (you should be able to recognize the character even as a silhouette and even if they were bald and naked)
• Has a design that reflects their personality (you should get a general idea of their personality the moment you look at them) (research the psychological symbolism of shapes)
• Has physical attributes that compliment the content of the story
• Able to complete the actions required by the story
• Interesting to watch
• Has a harmonious colour scheme that doesn't clash and isn't distracting (try using analogous or complimentary colours)
• Has colours that further reflect their personality through colour symbolism

TIP: You want your character to also appear unique. Try taking an aspect of their personality and exaggerating it in the design. Eg. an optimistic character might have large eyes. Incorporate as much of the information you've typed out about this character into the visual design as you can.

More Character Designs Checklist:
Now go out and draw your character again, but this time:

• Draw them at different ages (baby, child, teenager, adult, etc). Try to age your character right from baby to old person
• Draw them in different clothing combinations (eg. formal dress, pyjamas/sleepwear, sportswear, swimwear)
EDIT: Okay this is the only reasonable category that will accept HTML text.

I worked all day on this, and I wanted to put it in a PSD or Illustrator document, complete with drawing areas, but then I realized that anybody who uses this....list, is probably going to wind up typing paragraph after paragraph about their characters, and running out of room for information. I plan to use this in future so I can introduce people to my own characters in lengthy list, profile format.

The info I got for this came from a number of sources. Firstly my own character generator from a little while back, other character profile templates on Deviantart, and finally a scriptwriting booklet I had left over from college. There was a section in it with a LOT of helpful questions that really got me thinking and helped add that extra dimension to story characters. And some parts are new that I made up.

Planning to make one for species and worlds when I get around to it. Compared to this one, those should be easy. To use it, download or copy into notepad, word or whatever you use. I suggest typing your answers in another font or making the text a larger size, then typing in the rest in a normal size. Keep your completed profile as a text or word file in a folder with your character sketches and refer back to it when you get stuck with your story.

I just want to say thank you so much for making this for everyone. This is extraordinarily helpful with writing, thinking, and actually well-developing characters and their story. There are so many things in here that I never would have thought to cover that really help me. So thank you. Thanks very much for taking your time to make this to be an amazing resource for everyone who uses it :D (Big Grin)

That's okay. There's no rush to complete it.

It usually takes me months to completely fill these out.

That's okay. Glad it helped.

It might be a bit too in depth. Probably not something to fill out all at once.

Is a star sign like someone's Zodiac symbol? Like Scorpio, Gemini, Libra, etc.
Mintoons Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2015  Professional Digital Artist
Yes. There's also the Chinese zodiac (that refers to the year of the snake, year of the sheep, etc), but the one I'm referring to here is the Western zodiac (which is leo, scorpio, etc). These signs have personality traits associated with them which can be beneficial for starting a character profile.
PaintMePolarBear Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2015  Student General Artist
Alright, thank you. That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure.

Awesome profile! 8D
I'm in the process of filling it out, but I don't understand what to do with the character design checklist. Is it just for information or do I need to put pictures of my character there?
Mintoons Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
Sorry about the delayed response. That last part is just for information. Just a few things to consider if you wanted to draw your character.
Ann-nna Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
That's okay and thanks for answering! I already put pictures in this section anyway. XD
Mintoons Featured By Owner Sep 7, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
That's okay. I guess you could do that too. There's no hard and fast rule about how you approach this. Art is art.

Is it alright if I use this as a deviant profile, so I can show more about myself?
(Not that anyone cares X'D, it's kinda sad)
It's alright if that is to much to ask.
Mintoons Featured By Owner Jun 19, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
That's okay. Sorry about the lack of response. I've been pretty busy.
MyLittleGamer Featured By Owner Jan 31, 2014  Student Writer
I'm new to deviant art so don't call me stupid because of my question: How do you type this out and get it on deviant art? can you just put it in your journal? I'm so confused! I can't figure it out! help me please!
Mintoons Featured By Owner Jan 31, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
You can download the whole template in HTML format by clicking on the download button to the right, then you can select all the text in the template and then copy and past it into a program of your choice (or you can just do that from your web browser and skip the previous step). I usually use Word but on a Mac it would be Textedit or the Mac version of Word. From there you can fill it out how you want and save it.

To get your work on Deviantart, you can submit a new deviation and upload the Word or text file that has your completed template in it, or you can go to Stash, click "compose in stash writer" and copy and paste the text in your completed template to Stash Writer. Either way should make Deviantart turn it into a literature submission.

Hope that helps.
