Next page: This has been discontinued due to my disinterest in the Naruto series and fandom for two years now.

This is a little wider because it was drawn on wider paper. I usually draw on 11 x 8.5 but this was on 12 x 9. I just made the height the same pixels as usual (1200), so it should be an extra 100 pixels wide.

This was drawn and inked traditionally and then taken to the computer for words, black/grey tones, and straighter lines.

Any brushes used will have been from here: [link] or here: [link]

ah, too bad. I was nice while it lasted. Nice work. A few hiccups with missing words and all, but good one the less.

I think you ended this doujin on a really good note. It ties up most of the plot lines and is very, very cute. Overall it was very well drawn, and written. I think your typography could have used some work. A lot of the text was less readable because it was centered and had an erratic rag. Also, the panels could have been sized and aligned with a grid - this makes it easier for the eye to move around because things follow a consistent pattern.

Overall, I give it a 9/10. I'll take a look at your other works too.

Thank you for the comment; this is really helpful.

My typography was definitely a very hug sore spot at the time of drawing this and is something I am trying to work on more recently. I mean, I used comic sans for this doujin ahaha.

I'm not quite positive what you mean by sized and aligned with a grid, can you elaborate (maybe a specific page example)? (Do you mean the composition weight tends to feel uneven because of the layouts I used?)

That's a very high rating! I'm very grateful you think well of this project, and, again, thank you for such a detailed comment :)

I don't think using Comic sans here was a bad thing and I'm a designer, haha. It's very expected for a comic/manga, but it's not like its illegible or anything. That being said you could probably widen your audience if you chose something that wasn't disliked so much by designers.

This is the best example of a grid I can come up with. As you can see, the site is divided into little cells with a grid. It goes to a kind of extreme with it because the site never once breaks the grid. But for a doujin you would probably have each major panel use up a horizontal row of cells and the minor panels would only use one cell.

Yes, I thank you for listening. It's pretty tough to get good feedback on sites like Deviatart.

Comic sans is pretty much the devil in the designer world though which is why I brought it up, although I have noticed it's common in a lot of fanmade novice works like you've pointed out (which this certainty filled the niche of). At the time of making this comic, I pretty much had nothing else to use nor did I even know comic sans was hated (I was a sophmore in high school when I started School Daze with no ability to install new fonts onto GIMP since I didn't acquire photoshop and the ability to download fonts until well after it was finished). I continued to use it for this comic for consistency after finding out, but I haven't used it since (this was finished in January of 2011 after all).

Oh, alright! Thank you for clarification. School Daze was definitely... Well, it sucked when it came to layout. I was too worried about cramming lots of information into a page with walls of text instead of condensing the information and making it into more easily read as well as distributing the space to correlate with narrative weight. I would say it was my biggest pitfall.

I'm just glad you took the time to do so, honestly. I love feedback (critiques and professors giving me suggestions are honestly my favorite part of my art classes), although I do love it more when I can tell the person knows what they're talking about in their critique (as you seem to).

Ahhh, so you used a bitmap editor to make these comics? I would suggest a vector program like Inkscape at the very least to make the layouts because of the level of precision it allows you. That, and your lines will come out even cleaner. Inkscape's one of the best programs I use currently alongside GIMP. I'd highly recommend it for projects like this. Setting type and laying down panel lines are both things that it is REALLY strong at. Plus you get nice stuff like kerning and letting, in a free vector program. Let's just say it outperforms Adobe Illustrator in a lot of ways.

The typography in this doujin isn't the best, but everything else makes it worth the experience. I wouldn't beat yourself up over it too much. After all, typography is damn near unheard of IRL. People make mistakes with it so frequently, I can't recount how many times I go by an overdesigned piece of crud in the store...My best suggestion is that if you do nothing else, make choices that help your text be legible. Use serif typefaces at small sizes, and use expressive type at large sizes, control your rag, right justified, the grid, and stuff like that. Putting priority on legibility is the design equivalent of "playing it safe", and there's nothing wrong with that.

Thanks again for listening to my critique. I get this hardly ever when I comment on something, it's nice to see someone think of critique the same way I do: as a conversation. I know my works on DA don't look like much, but I keep my main portfolio offline to protect it, y'know?

Anyways, you got a new watcher. I want to see your new works. Perhaps you'll ship a little in your new comic? Haha, don't listen to me over here. I'm just dying for Kishi to do something with Naruhina, you know?

I didn't draw it in GIMP either. Aha, maybe I should've explained my process for this earlier. My lines are kind of funky because I drew it all out traditionally and scanned it in (the brightness was raised to make the paper "clean," but it sacrificed line quality :(). The only digital things I had done were the tones (except chapter one as the tones were done in blick markers), text, panel lines and in the epilogue as well as scattered screentones throughout I did in GIMP. But, otherwise this particular doujin was drawn out on paper. Right now I do everything in Photoshop, but I didn't get photoshop until well after I had finished this. I'll check into Inkscape though! I'm always eager to try new programs (especially when they have the magic word free attached and I'm too poor atm for illustrator).

Thank you for that. Hmm, that's really good advice. I'll keep that in mind.

I can already imagine the responses of "if you don't like don't look!" and the sort. I mean, I won't pretend I'm not protective of the things I make because even if I'm unsatisfied with something it's still something I made, y'know? But at the same time artists have to realize to get better, you have to fix mistakes, and another person's eyes are good for seeing those mistakes. Same with writing. And it's okay to disagree with critiques, but courtesy should be given instead of capslock about how they're just a hater. People really shouldn't judge skill level, or even artistic intellect level by a person's DA gallery. Man, that's such a cop out attempt at discrediting another's opinion; I hate when people do that.

Yay! (: I'm definitely sticking to my guns about no shipping in my new comic (but knowing me if you squint sideways you might be able to see stuff? I don't plan those out but sometimes I accidentally make everyone touch-y feel-y). I will say that I do have a new Naruhina comic (comedy) in my brain where they're already together, I just have to write it down and plan it out for real instead of disembodied thoughts before I'll even attempt to start drawing it. Kishimoto is the ultimate tease. We'll be waiting another six months before an update on that front (although I would love to be proved wrong).
