I love typography

Soooooo this is an attempt at something new for me :)
I realise similar ideas have been done before, so it's not the most original of typography works I guess, but it's something I wanted to try.

I'd appreciate any critique from other artists more experienced in this area :)

A very appealing piece of Typography <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h…" width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart -"/>
I love the colors, the concept and the layout. The Chalkboard background and pink color go together very well and make this deviation very pleasant to look at.

Still i see some place for improvement. The heartshape, even if it's not a piece of typography is s a bit too simple in my opinion. Now i don't know how they were done technically but my tip would be to draw them as paths in illustrator and add some preset brush that will make them look more like drawn with chalk.
To go into typographic detail, i would adjust the kerning between the letters and give them some more space, while reducing the kerning at the y's. That will give the type a more even look.
I am not a big fan of so big drop shadows either, you could reduce their size and opacity and still get the effect without it being so distracting.

I tried to give you constructive criticism to help you make this already beautiful piece of art even better. It does look like a lot of critique, but i hope it will help you improve <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile) - :)"/>

cheers,

Thank you very much for the critique, it's my first believe it or not!

I appreciate any help I get with this stuff as it's a new area for me, so I will be taking everything you've told me here into consideration and I'll probably edit this pretty soon too!

You're totally right about the heart, I was actually going to draw it out myself and scan it in when I got a chance, because it looks so amateur as it is. I don't have Illustrator or I'd do what you had suggested. Although I could probably draw the paths in Photoshop. It's just getting that hand-drawn effect you know?

Once again, thanks alot :D

you are welcome
i just loved it from first view and wanted to share my thoughts ;)

well, scanning sounds good

you can do the path in photoshop as well... you can also use brush outlines there
you make a path, select a dry brush (think they are calle like that) on an empty layer you select the path with the pen tool, right click and choose fill path outline, then you have to choose brush and select simulate pressure. you should get a hand drawn shape then :)

Yah, that's what I was thinking of, much better idea. Unfortunately the psd file for this is on my boyfriend's computer, so I won't get to fix it for a few days, which is irriating lol!

I'm glad you like it, it's nice to hear :)
