Baba Yaga and Vasilisa Diptych by MiloNeuman Baba Yaga and Vasilisa Diptych by MiloNeuman
Aaaaaand the completed work. Or, at least as completed as it's going to get right now. This illustration was done for the intermediate drawing class I'm currently enrolled in. The project description was to create a composition by casting shadows onto a workable surface and then drawing those shadows. I decided to take this potentially very abstract assignment a more representational route. This piece was done entirely in charcoal.

The story being illustrated is the Slavic folk tale, Vasilisa the Beautiful. This is actually the second time I've used this story as subject matter for a homework assignment, this [link] being the last time. As far as the silhouette approach is concerned, I was very inspired by the work of :iconhimmapaan: , particularly his myths and legends of Russia series: [link]

You should all check him out, he does some pretty slick work.

My only regret posting this online is that there is no way that this image can capture the scale of the work. This piece is 8 feet tall and about this same width across. I wish you all could see it in person, because it's a lot cooler that way. You'll just have to use your imaginations, unfortunately.

Finally, many thanks to :iconcheeko-001: for modeling for me and for holding things up to make shadows... and for putting up with what will go down in history as the world's worst date idea.

It wasn't really my idea of a date, but it was still a lot of fun!
