This is it: my Incredible Cross-Sections style Moldy Crow!

I apologize in advance for the large size, but on the bright side this allows you to print it full size as well as see all the text.

I took my painting to a company which specializes in digitizing art, then I put it in Paint.NET and added the text and such. I wanted to create the feel of the first ICS book, so it has a small picture from the game Dark Forces of the Moldy Crow and no tech specs.

All of the text is made up by me, and contains a lot of ideas that don't necessarily agree with the official ship description, but that's because the original description is pure baloney in my not-so-humble opinion. For instance, there's no way a ship this small has a boarding ramp or sleeping quarters or a cargo hold or . . . It also gives a good reason why Jan always had goggles on when she flew the ship in Jedi Knight.

It you do print it up full size as a poster, please show me how it looks on a wall. I haven't yet printed it up (I mean, I already have one insanely large painting of the Crow!), so if anyone does so then I'd love to see how it looks.

Star Wars, Dark Forces, and the Moldy Crow are all (c) 1997 by Lucasarts Entertainment Company
Text is (c) 2008 by Me, other than the Star Wars references.

Thank you! I actually got compliments from the Incredible Cross-Sections artists who worked on the books a few years ago. Made my entire year!

And with good reason!

The first time I saw your illustration, I thought it had been published in a book and actually began an internet search to find out more about it.

Lol, yeah, I'm still amazed people mistake it for an illustration for a book, heh. I didn't imagine people would, but then I started having to correct people!

Awesome job, looks just like the books! About the size issue, I think I can fix that. HWK-105,HWK-270,HWK-290, and HWK-1000 now every one can find a hawk that fits.

I can't lie: for a few minutes after I ran into this image in Google search, I genuinely thought it was in one of those books and I'd never seen it. This is fantastic. I need to see if something like this exists for a TIE Defender or some other famous ship I actually like. :)

Lol, I love when people think that it's an official piece of art from the books. The artists who painted those illustrations are very talented, so being mistaken for one is pretty awesome. I've considered painting more of them, but my top priority is getting some model commissions made. However, after my plate is clear, I'll probably do something like the TIE Defender or AT-PT (the latter is one that I have actually finished the sketch for).

I really hope you'll consider it, I'm sure lots of people would look forward to it!

I randomly stumbled across your poster and recently had it printed and added to the wall of the gaming corner in my office. Had to tweak it a little bit to make it perfectly 24x36 @ 200ppi, but it looks great! I run a gaming channel on Youtube called Dome-Candy Games (www.youtube.com/user/B…) and occasionally a bit of the poster can be seen in my videos or live streams. Thanks for creating and offering the free download!

OH man, that's really cool! :D Thanks for telling me! I'll check out your channel, too, if only to catch a glimpse of my work. :) And you're quite welcome!

EDIT: Guess I was too late to visit it... :( Do you have any pictures of the poster on your wall?

im just looking at this and thinking how the hell can this thing fit 6 passengers and 150 tones of cargo the cockpit area is the largest part and it barley fits two let alone 6. this isn't a light freighter
SSMagus's avatar
At most it could latch onto a cargo pod and carry that. But yeah, this is a small passenger shuttle at best, not a freighter.

Because the original stats were made by someone who had no idea what this "freighter" looked like or how big its cockpit is.

ok then why where they not changed

They have been changed since then. The new measurement of 16.5 meters is officially the size of the HWK-290, confirmed by Lucasfilm when Fantasy Flight Games wanted an official number for the size of the ship for their X-wing Miniatures Game.

I ran into this issue while doing RPGs.  My solution was to keep it very vague about the actual interior dimensions, but always--always--mentioned it as being extremely cramped inside.

it just irritates me

While some people point to the Dietz-penned novels as the main source of the inconsistency, but the original game mentioned "decontamination showers" that are implied to be in the Crow itself.

Actually, the original game's computer model for the Crow was, roughly, 30 meters long. This can be measured by the DF Units in the level editor, and the ship was about 15 DF Units long. A DF unit was about 2 meters, so one can conclude it was originally supposed to be 30 meters. But then in JK they retconned the size to about half that, possibly because of confusing DF Unit with meter. Since the evidence in JK is clearer, though, 16.5 meters is a better number.

i also noticed a lack of space in the slave 1 as well

Dude. This is fantastic!

Absolutely top notch work! Looks like this is a page in one of the ICS books. Great work! Great choice of ship. Always been a fan of the Moldy Crow :D Shame she only survives in DF II if you go dark side :P
