"Warp Factor Three, Mister Sulu." :D

Oh how I enjoy this old TV series! Star Trek wasn't a part of my childhood, but as I got older I found it to be an excellent sci-fi series, with a fantastic cast of characters.

This is my drawing of the most famous captain in TV history: Captain James Tiberius Kirk. I worked hard to get the eyes right on this one, because they are the part your own eyes are naturally drawn to. If you can get the eyes right, providing the rest of the face is proportioned correctly, then a portrait will look great.

I think I spent about four hours on this, mainly adding and subtracting tone until it looked right. My patience I think has paid off.

I actually drew it at work, and before I left I showed it to one of the supervisors, and he insisted I take it out on the shop floor and show the mechanics. They were all floored. :D They also suggest that my next subject be one of my co-workers, a hot girl about my age. Considering how sexual harassment suits usually go though, I think I'll stick to TV characters. ;)

Anyway, comments are welcome! :D

Captain's log, stardate 27523.9. Discovered excellent piece of artwork on a recent voyage. The composition appears to be of ordinary graphite pencil, but the shading has been noted by our landing party to be of a most fantastic quality. Further exploration may be necessary.

Captain's log, supplemental. The alien who composed this message sends his eternal thanks and promises that more shall be created in years hence. :)

Daaaaaaayum! :iconshockedpinkieplz: This is incredible! How do you draw something like this?? And during your work??
And what's going on in the hidden streak?

Thanks! :D Well, for starters I read a great book by a guy called J. D. Hillberry called Drawing Realistic Textures in Pencil. My work at the time involved sitting in an office waiting on them to call me over to photograph an engine, and I had hours between jobs, so I sat around and fooled around on the internet. I only got paid per engine, so I didn't really get paid to sit around on my butt. ;) Nevertheless, I did have plenty of time to draw. :)

That hidden streak is a troll who decided to defend art theft by taking this drawing, pixelizing it, then claiming I was stealing his work. Pathetic, right? But he insisted on wasting my time by engaging in a rather heated discussion with me. I just wish I had thought to block him and report him before it got completely out of hand. Trolls thrive on attention, so it was doing him a favor keeping it public. Therefore, I hid the messages and reported him to dA. He's gone now, thank goodness. :)

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like an interesting read =)
Lol, sounds like one can get a lot done with a job like this =D

Wow... that has SO many holes in it... how does one even argue about that...

IKR? But he was being an obtuse troll, not a logical, thinking person. I believe he's been kicked off dA for operating sockpuppet accounts, as well as for being a dick in general.

I forgot to mention that they also suggested that it be a nude of her . . .

Not that I would mind, but yeah. I don't think it would go over very well with my boss. ;)

Thank you very much! :D

Have you considered asking her permission for a non-risque portrait? Based on this, I'd say you could do a flattering job.

Not really. I actually prefer doing characters rather than people I know, with the exception of people close to me, because this level of quality requires that I really love the subject matter. I do appreciate though that you think I'd do a good job. :D
