Description

Considering my username (which, if you ever wondered, is indeed a Dragon Warrior Monsters reference), it's probably a little odd that I've never made this guy (or any monster from that game, for that matter) until now. Presenting my Chibi Rain Hawk! (Known as Prism Peacock in later releases).

Having been my favorite monster in the series for years, this is actually one of the first things I ever wanted to make back when I first started crocheting (about 14 years ago), and I racked my brain so hard, and tried to consider how I could piece together the various free patterns I started with, but I just couldn't visualize how I would ever be able to do it at the time, so I wrote it off as a pipe dream fantasy project that I might one day reconsider.

Last week, as I was considering what to make next, the thought crossed my mind again, and I put some genuine thought into it. Finally, I decided to just design a Chibi version, based somewhere in between the concept art and the original game boy color sprite. This is probably the first thing I've made that I actually sketched out a rough design of, usually I just make stuff referencing the original art and it ends up looking somewhat Chibi in my style.

Anyway, having wanted a plushie of this guy since I was like 12 and used to obsessively play Dragon Warrior Monsters all the time, having Rain Hawk as the star member of my team, I gotta say I'm quite thrilled with the result! (The picture behind him is one I drew of my team back then).

As usual, I have the pattern, but I will say, while this wasn't actually particularly hard stitch-wise, this is probably the single most tedious thing I have ever made because of all the color changing and small parts. I worked on it for 5 days in a row after work, and the feet alone took me 2 hours collectively. That being said, it was worth every second, because got dang is he aesthetically pleasing!

Anyway, if you're feeling sadistic, here you go!

(I ended up not doing the painted eye detail described in the pattern, but it's just an outline around the eyes with a small curve at the top corners to make the eyebrows)

Chibi Rain Hawk Plushie

Yarn colors:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green (a lighter shade like lime/spring green)
Blue (primary or royal, any relatively dark shade)
Purple (anything in the orchid/lavender range)

Additional materials:
Black and white felt scraps
Black fabric paint (optional, for eye outline)
Hot glue
Yarn needle
Stuffing

*Notes: there are a few parts with some tension adjustments, but nothing drastic and these will be described in the pattern. There will also be some sewing and lining stitches up in the toes before finishing the leg. Just be sure to read the pattern carefully.

Head/Body front:
1: with purple, 6 sc in magic ring (6)
2: inc x6 (12)
3: (inc, sc) x6 (18)
4: (inc, 2 sc) x6 (24)
5: (inc, 3 sc) x6 (30)
6: even rnd
7: (inc, 4 sc) x6 (36)
8-10: even rnds
11: (inc, 5 sc) x6 (42)
12-14: even rnds
15: (dec, 5 sc) x6 (36)
16: even rnd
17: (dec, 4 sc) x6 (30)
18: (dec, 3 sc) x6 (24)
19: (dec, 2 sc) x6 (18)
20: in front loops (this rnd only), even rnd
21: even rnd
22: (inc, 2 sc) x6 (24)
23: even rnd
24: (inc, 3 sc) x6 (30)
25-27: even rnds
28: (dec, 3 sc) x6 (24)
29: even rnd
30: (dec, 2 sc) x6 (18)
31: (dec, sc) x6 (12)
Finish off, leaving long end. Flatten last rnd and sew together across, using needle tip to push the stuffing into the sides. This will shape the bottom of the body where the front legs will go.

Body back
1: with purple, 6 sc in magic ring (6)
2: inc x6 (12)
3: (inc, sc) x6 (18)
4: (inc, 2 sc) x6 (24)
5-9: even rnds, work first 2 rnds as [3 loose sc, 1 tight sc, 3 loose sc, 17 sc], the other rnds work in normal tension
10: (dec, 2 sc) x2, dec, 12 sc, dec (20)
11-12: even rnds, work both as [10 sc, 10 loose sc]
Finish off, stuffing firmly into the back haunches made in rnd 5-6, sew to back of body, with the loose side of rnds 11-12 toward the neck so that the haunches are on the bottom.

Toes (make 3 for each foot, 12 toes total)
*This part will require a good bit of patience, and some minimal stuffing as you go*
*Its best to make one foot at a time because you will need to continue the leg from the third toe without finishing off*
*Also, I highly recommend that after each color row, you tie the two ends you should have of the same color together, snip them off close to the knot, and then tuck into the leg, otherwise you may end up with some loose ends.*
1: with blue, 4 sc in magic ring (4)
2: (inc, sc) x2 (6), change to green in last st
3: even rnd, change to yellow
4: even rnd, change to orange
5: even rnd, change to red
Finish off all but third piece, leave long enough ends on the other two to sew a few stitches. Continue third piece as follows.
6: joining to either of the other toes, sc in any stitch, and remaining 5 sts around, then continue back to the current toe and sc 6 around. Two of the toes should be joined with an opening of 12 sc around. At this point, use the long end on the toe you just joined to sew the small gap closed between the toes.
[Using the end strand left on the remaining toe, sew to the joined toes, sewing 2 sts of the joined toes into one st of the remaining toe, leaving 2 sts open on the remaining toe. In other words, you will be condensing 8 open stitches on the joined piece into 4 open stitches on the last toe. This should leave you with all 3 toes joined, and an opening of 6 sc around at the top of the foot, (2 open sts on each toe)]
7: work even rnd around toes, changing to orange in last st. *You may need to work in a few decreases over the open spaces to close the gaps between the joined pieces, but you should still end up with 6 sts around.
8: even rnd, change to yellow
9: even rnd, change to green
10: even rnd, change to blue
11: even rnd, change to purple
12: even rnd
13: (inc, sc) x3 (9)
14: (inc, 2 sc) x3 (12)
Finish off. Once you have all feet made, sew to bottom of body. You should have a clear guide from the shaping on the bottom of the body front and back, sew directly onto these points.

Tail
Outer pieces (make 2)
1: with red, 4 sc in magic ring (4)
2: (inc, sc) x2 (6)
3-10: even rnds
Finish off, leaving a pretty long end on one.
Inner pieces (make 5, one each of the other rainbow colors, excluding red)
1: ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hk and next 7, [sc, ch 1, sc] in last ch, working around to other side, 8 across foundation ch.
Finish off.

To attach, flatten the outer pieces; starting with the one you left the long end on, sew the Orange "feather" to the red piece, attaching only at the very bottom opening of the red. (Orange should only be 2 sts, sew to any 2 sc on the red piece). Laying the yellow feather flat over the orange, sew in place over the same 2 sts. This will be slightly tricky, but rather that going into the sc, you should be able to thread the needle through the outside loops of the 2 sc on the orange feather. Continue in this manner, attaching the green to the yellow, the blue to the green, and so on, ending with the other red piece. Once all the pieces are attached, pull the end up through the red piece about halfway, then weave the strand through all the feathers and back down through the first red piece and tie into place at any stitch. This will keep the tail from fanning out too much, but still allow it to fan out at the top.

For the base of the tail, I would actually recommend cutting out a strip of red felt long enough to wrap around the base of the tail, about half and inch wide, and cut it to look spiky on the outer edge. You mainly need this to cover the knots left on the bottom of the colored feathers, and to achieve the proper look for the tail. But if you don't have felt or don't like the look, here's how I crocheted mine.
1: with red, ch 15, sc in 2nd ch and across (14)
2: ch 1, turn, [sc, ch 1, insert hook downward into front loop of sc just made, pull up loop and sc, slip st into next sc] x7 across.
Finish off, wrap around base of tail and sew in place, then sew tail to back of body. Or if its easier, sew tail to body first, then add base and sew in place.

Horns (make 2)
1: with purple, 4 sc in magic ring (4)
2: (inc, sc) x2 (6)
3: even rnd, change to blue in last st
4: (inc, 2 sc) x2 (8)
5: even rnd
6: (inc, 3 sc) x2 (10), change to green
7: even rnd
8: (inc, 4 sc) x2 (12)
9: even rnd, change to yellow
10: dec, 4 sc, 6 loose sc (11)
11: sc, dec, 2 sc, [loosely: 2 sc, inc, 3 sc] (11)
12: dec, 2 sc, [loosely: 2 sc, dec, 3 sc] (9), change to orange
13-15: even rnds of (4 sc, 5 loose sc), change to red
16: even rnd
17: (ch 1, turn, 5 sc) x2, dec over side and next sc, 2 sc, dec over next sc and side (9)
18: 2 sc, inc, 6 sc (10)
Finish off, shape with stuffing, sew to top of head.

Beak
Top
1: with yellow, 4 sc in magic ring (4)
2: (inc, sc) x2 (6)
3: (inc, 2 sc) x2 (8)
4: (inc, 3 sc) x2 (10)
5: (inc, 4 sc) x2 (12)
6: (inc, 5 sc) x2 (14)
7: even rnd
Finish off, leaving long end.
Bottom
1-4: work same as top
5: even rnd
Finish off, leaving long end. Flatten both beak pieces and fold, folding bottom upward, and top downward, keeping the top piece wider so that it fits over the bottom slightly. I recommend sewing the bottom to the face first, then fitting the top piece over and around it, otherwise it might be more difficult to sew the inner part, but either way works.

Wings (outer edge, make 2)
1: with red, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hk and 3 across, 3 sc in last ch, work around and 4 sc across foundation ch. (11)
2: ch 1, turn, 5 sc, [sc, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch and next 4, sc] all in next st, 5 sc
Finish off.
Feathers (make 10, 2 each of the other rainbow colors, excluding red)
1: ch 6, sc in 2nd ch and next 3, 3 sc in last ch, work around and 4 sc across foundation ch.
Joining: *this is probably going to look way more complicated than it actually is, it just takes a lot of words to describe it exactly*
Open outer edge of wing and lay flat, with red feather pointing downward. Overlapping the feathers, each one a stitch higher than the previous, line them up from yellow to purple, ending with purple the top. Each of the 5 sts on the sides of the wing base should match up with the topmost st of each feather. (Not counting the sc at the base of the red feather). Using red yarn, sew each feather in place on both sides. Fold wing base in the middle so that all the feathers point down, then add a small amount of stuffing into the opening. You should be able to slide the whole piece slightly to make the feathers turn slightly forward or back, making it very easy to make the wings symmetrical. Once you have them how you like, sew to sides of body.

Using felt, cut out eyes and glue to face. Use black fabric paint for eye detail/outline (optional)
