Mikaela Roberts was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1994. Mikaela is a creative artist who works predominately in photography and design, but is also an accomplished illustrative artist. Mikaela is currently undertaking studies in her final year of a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Communication Design and Photography) at Deakin University in 2016.
While undertaking her studies Mikaela took the opportunity to return to Wantirna College in 2015 as a volunteer to assist in the schools performing arts program, her primary role was to take on the design and production of the promotional materials and programs. This opportunity gave Mikaela the chance to use all her skills from design, illustration, photography, project management and negotiating skills to successfully produce the required pieces in tight timeframes and to deliver a high quality product for the school. The end result was so successful that not only was she asked back to assist again but also that the programs produces are now being used as promotional material for the Wantirna College and their performing arts program.
Mikaela initially was interested in portraiture as her photographic style, this was born out of her earlier passion for drawing the faces of friends and family. As an artist she is drawn to a theme that relates to fantasy and horror, Mikaela likes to challenge her viewer’s eye and to have them question their sense or understanding of realty. One of her great interests is in film photography and dark room practices. Mikaela loves the physical hands on tactile nature the manual process and enjoys the ability to experiment with the analogue process and somewhat unpredictable outcomes that it produces.
As a commercial photographer and designer Mikaela understands that her role is to produce images and designs of anything, she truly believes that you can’t pigeon hole yourself into one type of image production you have to be versatile. Her philosophy is that as a practicing artist you understand light and shade and how to capture or present that in an image, it shouldn’t matter what it is. She takes great pride in her ability to understand and interoperate her clients needs and that her skill lies in the ability not only to get the image they want but also help them understand what image they want.
