The Commute by mikesblender The Commute by mikesblender
Date: 2010
Technique: Oil on canvas
Size: M20 (72.5×50 cm)

My first painting of 2010, and maybe the most detailed one I've ever done. My goal for this year is to focus less on quantity, and more on detail, something which most of my previous paintings lacked.

I don't know what it is about sheep that is a bit frightening, maybe it's their slightly dead looking eyes? And maybe it's just me. Gotta love em though. Wanted to use sheep again in a slightly dark/disturbing painting, but with a comical touch.

Lots of symbolism here, and those that know me well will probably be able to figure out some of it.

lol of course not right now they actually live at a friend of mine's house. The neighbors got a little fed up with the smell... even tho it was their own dog going thro a hole in the fence and crapping in the sheep's pen. :D

Completely like the idea of your painting ^^ Their eyes look so "blasť", I think this applies perfectly to the situation !

I don't know why but this one would be a really good cover for an 80ths thrash metal band.

The background colour gives an ominous feel to this painting. The far off look to the eyes on the sheep is very evident of what you see on the trains everyday. You have so much feeling in this. Love it.

YES!

BTW, I agree, there's something a bit creepy about sheep. I mean, I love all animals, including sheep, but you can see they are kind of like devils with those eyes, horns, beards, etc. My best friend grew up on a farm with goats and says they always gave him the creeps.

Yeah maybe the only animals that can compete with sheep for creepiness are goats!

I see sheeple (sheep people) Very satirical yet sadly true. We are all following the head, going though the motions. Fantastic. This really made a statement!

Looks like you've accomplished your task of adding detail very nicely. I love the textures of their wool/faces and the brush strokes on their shirts.

Honestly, the part that I find a little frightening is the orange background. I don't know why, but I get the feeling that if it weren't for that I would just think that it was funny/symbolic. I like it though; it makes me feel a little uneasy. I think any painting that can make you feel something like that is more or less successful :)
