Of course it's fine if you want to leave the model unmounted and just have it as a desk toy but I think that putting it on a stand looks much better and also protects the model from wear and tear. After trying a couple of different ideas I came up with a fairly simple and cheap solution using items that can be easily bought online and sometimes at the local craft shop.
The stand poles are piano wire, it's strong and rigid though for some it can be difficult to cut at the larger sizes. I find 2mm diameter is the best for my purposes.
For the bases I repurpose acrylic stamping blocks
