I honestly have no idea what is with lamas on DA. I see it as something you give artist to say I really like your art/ as a think you for favoriteing my art.

Just did some googling on DA LLama badges. It seems they're just what you said, a gesture of appreciation/thank you/etc which may be given once per person.
