Description
The skies of the Basin are an inhospitable place for many kinds of undead due to the sheer amount of ultraviolet radiation at altitude, and combined with the fact that mortals are a recent addition to the lands above the clouds in the wake of Old Alcida's collapse, means that vampirism in Ardea and the Baronies is basically unheard-of. But niches get filled over time, and a bizarre fey has stepped seamlessly into the role of the urbane predator. Magpires prey on mortals by draining them of their magical energy and sense of self, leaving their victims as barely-sentient husks which then often fall prey to mundane dangers like wild dogs or starvation. They can imbue a husk with a shard of their tremendous power to create a "magpire spawn", which serves the magpire near-mindlessly.
Rather than creatures of darkness that shun the light and recoil at the divine, magpires have the usual fey weaknesses (cold iron, hubris) but they have additional weaknesses in the form of extreme territoriality (a magpire will drop everything it might be doing to attack and kill another magpire in its chosen territory, and will even attack its own reflection), and its almost dragon-like desire to hoard treasure and beautiful objects. The cabochon it wears on its breast is magical and functions as an anchor into the mortal world - if the magpire is destroyed, so long as a cabochon is intact, it can return from the Fey Realm to the jewel's location. Worse still, if the cabochon is kept instead of being destroyed or hidden away somewhere, its bearer may find the jewel offers many powers to its new owner.
For a price.
