Description
Woodpeckers are basically pokemon already, their biology is insane
Osaigon Pikipek, the woodpecker pokemon
A regional form of Alola's pikipek (there is some debate over this: alolan pikipek was discovered by researchers first but the fossil record indicates it migrated to the islands long after it has established itself on the mainland). It is a small normal-and-flying type pokemon that is very common in the forests of Osai. Pikipek looks for bugs to eat all spring and summer, but in autumn it diligently drills holes in tress to store seeds, acorns, and other hard berries like apricorns. It then uses these as a winter food source, and guards them against thieves diligently. Osaigon pikipek evolves into drumbeak at level 14.
Drumbeak, the woodpecker pokemon
Drumbeak is a medium-sized fighting-and-flying type pokemon from the deep forests of Osai. Its rattling calls echo through the trees early in the morning, and only once it's sure it has the attention of any nearby rival drumbeaks, it begins drumming on a hollow tree with its iron-hard beak. Drumbeak judge each other on the length and volume of these drum solos and establish a local hierarchy thereby. It uses the gauge on its beak to line up its strikes so it always hits its target, no matter how fast it pecks. Drumbeak evolves into Dryodrum at level 28.
Dryodrum, the drum solo pokemon
Dryodrum is a large fighting-and-flying type pokemon from the montane forests of Osai. It loves the sound of its drumming and practices on hollow trees, fallen logs, eavestroughs, telephone poles, and buildings - the louder the drumming, the better. However if it hears a rival dryodrum it will fly into a rage and challenge it to a fight then and there. Dryodrum patrols a very large territory to find all of the food it needs, so it can't tolerate rivals on its patch, and will investigate anything that even sounds like it might be another dryodrum - construction work, people playing music, branches tapping against buildings during a storm - all are investigated and scowled at, once it determines it wasn't a rival after all. It will also attack pokeballs, possibly because the white and red remind it of a dryodrum's colours. As such it has been adopted as an emblem of radical pokemon liberation groups in the Osai region.
I used to live in a neighborhood where a woodpecker delighted in hammering out solos on a neighbor's ventilation chimney, so I can see where you got the idea.
I also imagine trainers may have to sacrifice a spare pokeball every few weeks just to keep their Dryodrums happy, lest the bird start trying to break occupied balls
