_______.-== GET THE POSTER! ==-._________

--------------------------> [link] <--------------------------------

UPDATE: goes to print Monday, all typos will be corrected.

I created the initial concept of this poster on the night of November 4th. Inspired by Barack Obama’s victory and struck with a sense of awe when realizing the amount of hard fought progress that has been achieved in this country, I wanted to pay homage to this centuries long journey.

The original graphic became very popular and spread all over the internet. Many people loved it and ask me to make a print. While I initially created it rather spur of the moment and with no desire to sell it as a poster, the graphic needed to be completely overhauled in order to make it practical for printing. The original would have been 12 feet long. So I took the opportunity to really refine the design and create a lasting piece. There were also many additions to the time line that people suggested.

This poster is not a tally of African American achievements, rather it is a record of progress and setbacks. While Obama’s election is not the endgame of equality, it is a magnificent example of what is truly possible. I hope you enjoy it and that it reminds you of the shoulders we all stand upon and the stained greatness of this nation and its people who have indeed, overcome.

And he has got elected just because he is an african american. Not because he has abillities to rule a country etc.

And you want to know the funniest thing about this means absolutely nothing, because we'll still be hearing about racism and how poor, helpless African-Americans are held back because of it.

They've been whining about it even after all these things came to pass; what makes you think one more "victory" will mean anything.

...and he has agreed to carry out the wholly evil new world order. Oh well.

lol people forget that Africans participated in slave trade as well.

Oh yea, and about all the media's push of "white racists in America." Remember, Whites in the United States were the first to ever abolish slavery. How bout them apples?

What a fantastic idea! I'm faving this not just because I like it so much, but to remind myself to buy a print when I get the chance.

I really wanted to make a comment about what a powerful piece and how well presented an idea it is, but... I really can't think of anything.
This is fantastic. Good work.

I love the discussion that this work has gotten, and I also love the poster itself.

I agree that although Obama may not be a descendant of slaves, he is still someone who would have been highly discriminated against in the (not too distant) past.

I agree with the calls for posters of women's struggles and the Asian-American idea. It wouldn't necessarily be so lengthy for an Asian-American poster- the most notable incidents of discrimination against Asian-Americans were 1) the fact that the Chinese were harshly discriminated against (alongside the Irish) during the construction of the railroads, and 2) internment of people of Japanese descent (and the public mistreatment of anyone that looked like "a Jap," including other Asian ethnicities).

Women's issues would be even more lengthy than this poster, if we consider a world-wide view of the problem. Technically female suppression has occurred since antiquity.

However, I hope that in the celebration of how far we've come in our attempts in equality, we don't go to the other extreme and treat the ones of the type "who discriminated against us in the past" as we have been treated.

I hate to nitpick (okay, no I don't)...but when you're the president, you're just American. There's no hyphenation. Not cool. :|
BeAt-Of-My-HeArT Featured By Owner Jan 25, 2009
This is absolutely amazing! It is a great time-line of what has happened to African-Americans, from being slaves that would be killed if they escaped, to having one of them become the president of the United States. Amazing. :D

Why does the poster refer to everyone else as "black" but Obama as "African American"? Was that intentional?
jimmykramer Featured By Owner Jan 24, 2009
cool poster. only one problem. the people of the USA don't elect the president. it's not a democracy. :(

It's "Ku Klux Klan".

i love obama, but you all are idiots. He's is not the african american savior. First, he's half black, and half white. Second, his black half is from africa, not anywhere in america. His lineage is slavery free. It's more likely that his black ancestors took part in the slave trade sending people to america. Until a president that actually has a connection to the abhorrent slavery and, less so, discrimination, that occurred in the past, save your breath. Appreciate obama for the ideals he holds rather than his skin color.
Oloranya Featured By Owner Jan 24, 2009
Where he gets his African heritage and whether he's mixed-race is beside the point. His being elected is a big deal because while he may technically be half white, his appearance is that of a black man (if no one told me he was half white, i wouldn't know, would you?), and blacks have been oppressed in America for centuries based solely on the color of their skin, the american people electing a black man, even a half black man, to the highest office in the nation is a sign of how far we've come as a country in the way of civil rights and all that.
