[Mini-Tutorial] Iray Progressive Render Settings
This weekend I got a chance to talk to the DAZ 3D developers about the progressive render settings and what they do.  Here's some clarification on those settings.  I did not know some of this myself until I had a chance to ask this weekend!
The progressive render settings are found in the "Render Settings" tab in DAZ Studio and the "Editor" portion of that tab.  The important settings are:
Max Samples:  Short version: The Max Samples count is the maximum number of samples Iray will achieve before it stops the render.  The default number is 5000.  How long it takes to get to 5000 samples varies by what kind of hardware your computer has - it will get to 5000 much faster on an Nvidia graphics card than a CPU or an AMD card.
Longer version, as best I was able to learn from web research: In any kind of rendering, the engine is trying to depict a 3D image as though it were in real space; in real space your eye views all images as continuous, but in the r

During the last few weeks I was building a personal WordPress site in response to DA's upcoming launch of their new Eclipse design.  Unfortunately, my frustrating search for a suitable, user-friendly gallery plugin recently created tension in my marriage, not to mention the anxiety-inducing process I went through to make my site GDPR-compliant.  Suffice it to say, my experience has made me that much more thankful for DA, so much so that I've canceled my project.

In my humble opinion, Eclipse is a disaster waiting to launch in its current form and I am not looking forward to seeing it go live.  Nevertheless, I would rather deal with it than give my wife a reason to make me sleep in the den, so I've decided to resume posting my art.  Meanwhile, I hope DA takes the feedback they continue receiving to heart and reconsider the changes they're planning.

My name is Matthew "Nyghtfall" Hutchinson. I was born in September 1971. I've been married since October 1994, and make my living as a Customer Service Rep for a bank. My wife is permanently disabled. We are child-free by choice - we don't want that kind of expense or responsibility.

My Fetish

I’m a fantasy death fetishist. That means I get off on watching consenting adults role-play fantasy death scenes. Whether in mainstream movies, TV shows, or independent fetish videos, it doesn’t matter. If it’s well-produced, I'm interested.

My fetish dates back to my youth. Thanks to relatively liberal parents and a neighborhood friend's Mom, I saw a lot of Horror movies by the time I was 13, starting with The Exorcist at age 10. By age 15, I was getting bored with their formulaic storylines, particularly slasher flicks. They just weren’t scary anymore, so I started watching them just to see how many different ways filmmakers could kill off a bunch of stupid coeds. In other words, like most Horror movie fans, I started rooting for the villains. Over time, I developed a strong preference for asphyxiation. Having often held my own breath to the point of nearly passing out to cure hiccups, I can’t imagine a scarier way to die. Consequently, I love watching other people pretend to be asphyxiated to death.

Why 3D Art

In 1994, I joined the World Wide Web shortly after it went public. Three years later, I discovered a website called Necrobabes and learned that I'm not the only one who gets off on watching people play dead. I've been a highly active member of the fantasy death fetish community ever since and collected many videos, photos, and various types of artwork. I’ve also become very selective with what I add to my collection.

By 2004, I felt a growing need to create my own art. Unfortunately, I can't draw anything more complex than stick figures. Custom fetish videos are prohibitively expensive to finance and I can’t afford to shoot my own.

How I Got Started

In 2006, I learned about a company called DAZ 3D. They developed a digital art and 3D animation program called DAZ Studio, and continue offering it freely to anyone interested in learning how to create 3D art. I was intrigued by the idea of bringing my own fantasies to life in a virtual environment. The opportunity to try it for free was irresistible, so I downloaded a copy and gave it a whirl. Much to my surprise, the learning curve proved incredibly steep, particularly with regard to content management. I spent the next three years just noodling around with Studio.

In August 2009, I finally started my first project, Darcy Strangled, and completed it that September. I also developed a strong interest in photorealism. At the time, DAZ Studio wasn’t going to work for my needs, so I switched to Poser for its advanced functionality and enormous community support.

Since then, many significant improvements have been made to DAZ Studio and Poser. Today, artists have access to features that were once only available in high-end, professional applications. As of June 2015, DAZ Studio is my tool of choice thanks to a newly-licensed, built-in render engine called Iray, and I could not be happier.
