The Hero of Twilight
Following the defeat of Ganondorf, Link and Zelda went to the top of the Arbiter’s Grounds to see one last time Midna who had to return to her world. After a hard farewell, Midna decided to break the Mirror of Twilight so that the Twilight world would never be in touch with the Light again, because of the many tragedies that Xanto's thirst for power and Ganondorf's perfidy caused.
They were now alone, with the heavy task of rebuilding the kingdom of Hyrule and helping the inhabitants regain serenity and joy, despite the terrible events that hit the kingdom.
Chapter I: Back to normal?
After Midna's departure, a long silence ensued. Link and Zelda did not say anything. They still gazed with astonished eyes on the Mirror of Twilight that had just been destroyed in front of them. Then they looked into each other's eyes. In their eyes was a certain sadness, and they continued to fix themselves for long minutes. Zelda, who until then was calm, could no longer contain what she felt. All this accumulated pain and all this suffering needed to be expressed. Hyrule was ravaged by this war and everything was to be rebuilt. As the princess of this kingdom, she worried a lot for her people. Tears began to flow down her face and it did not take more for Link to cry in turn. He also suffered a lot during this adventure. He joined Zelda and both sat down. They looked thoughtfully towards the castle, which was badly damaged by the battle against Ganondorf. Finally, Zelda spoke up:
- "Everything is finally over ... I .. I'm sorry that you had so much to suffer and to pass so many trials. I would have loved that all of this never happens ... Everything is to rebuild, and I do not really know what to do ... Everything seems so different now. "She sighed.
Link remained silent. He smiled benevolently and took Zelda's hand. He did not really know what to say, everything went so fast for him, he was just a shepherd and now he is the legendary hero that the prophecies of the kingdom announced. He rejected this status a bit, the glory was not what he was looking for. He just wanted to live happily and that people he loves are happy too.
They then took each other in their arms, forgetting for a moment everything that happened. This moment gave them a feeling of well-being, as if the fact that they were together lightened the weight of their burden.
Zelda then confessed to Link: "I have been alone on this throne for a few years now. Unfortunately a terrible event made that I had to take this place earlier than expected. The loss of my parents will always be engraved in my memory ... I was only 5 when the disease took away my mother and 15 when I lost my father. It is since that day that I have learned over time to keep my feelings to myself and to express them little. Following the death of my father, Mr Auru, who was my teacher when I was a child, was chosen to temporarily governed until I turned 16, the age at which a ruler of the kingdom is considered fit to govern. He is an upright man in whom my father placed all his confidence in case such a tragedy happened. "
Link who until then did not speak, said: "About me ... I did not know my parents. According to Bo, the chief of our village, my father would have served the royal family, just like his own father. Then he would have decided to retire to the peaceful village of Ordon, aspiring to a quieter life. According to him, he was an excellent swordsman, the best of our village, and he kept telling me that I inherited his talent when he saw me training. As for my mother, Bo said that she had one of the most beautiful voices he has ever heard and that hearing her sing was magnificent. I just remember that my father sometimes played me a melody that his own father had taught him. One day he told me that it was important for me to memorize these notes, because according to him, if our land were to sink into chaos, playing this melody would prove who I really am and that I will never betray our kingdom. "
Zelda, then asked Link to hum this music. Astonished at what she had just heard, she smiled, then said: "This melody you are talking about, my parents were also playing it to me when I was younger. This is the song of the royal family. This melody is only transmitted in the royal family and is rarely taught to outsiders. One of your ancestors had to be highly distinguished with my family and had all its confidence to be able to learn this song. It's a legacy you can be proud of.
Then Link replied: "Certainly ... Anyway, the reason my family knows this music will probably remain a mystery. ". Talking about this reminded him of that strange spirit that taught him how to handle the Master Sword, he did not really know why and wondered who he might have been in the past.
As the sun set, they looked at the horizon, while being thoughtful. This discussion allowed them to open up to each other and get to know each other better. Zelda felt very lonely since the loss of her parents and it seemed that she had found in Link someone to trust, to whom she can confide. Link also felt better after speaking, Zelda's presence comforted him. Having witnessed the same terrible events, they understood each other when they were talking.
As the night approached, Zelda then proposed to Link to return with her and spend the night at the castle, a proposal he accepted with joy.
On the way home, she said, "Now that all this is over, in order to seal the evil, it is now time to put the Master Sword back in its base, but do not worry, we'll go tomorrow."
Link nodded to say yes, then they continued on their way. Having always lived in the remote village of Toal, he did not knew so much about the history of Hyrule, or even the castle town and its inhabitants. He was also getting to know Zelda better, she seems cold and not very expressive at first, and now she seems to be open and more relaxed.
He also wondered what the inhabitants of his native village were becoming, if everything went well.
The western entrance to the castle town was finally visible. When they arrived everything was quiet, Hyrule was already sleeping. Only a few guards who were doing their rounds and a small group of playing cats were still standing. Link and Zelda made their way to the castle, and when they reached the door, a guard who saw them, ran towards them and addressing to Zelda, said:
" Your Highness ! Is everything well? I am so happy to see you alive! After the monsters left, all the guards of the castle have reinvested the place and started looking for you. We were so worried about not finding you! But now, you are here. And ... forgive me my rudeness, but ... who is this person at your side? "
To which Zelda replied: "Do not worry. Everything is fine now. And do not worry, this man with me is called Link. He is a trusted person who has done a lot for our kingdom. No need to worry. And, if all the guards have already reinvested the place, in what state is the castle? "
- "The entrance and the throne room are heavily damaged. Stairs were destroyed and columns fell, and the gardens were damaged by the passage of monsters. Other rooms such as kitchens and bedrooms are still in good condition. Maybe a little dirty, but livable. There is a lot to do, but we took care to at least clean the tower where your apartments are so that they are ready for your return. The main staircase is in ruins, we made a temporary structure with the help of a named Raur ... No, um .. Auru I think. He and his group agreed to give us a hand and a goron who runs a small shop in the southern street. "
- "Well, I will join my apartments in that case. It is getting late and the day tomorrow will be busy. Have the room prepared in the same tower as mine. Mr. Link is our guest and he spends the night here. "
"At your orders, your Highness. "
Link and Zelda made their way to the castle entrance, which was indeed badly damaged. Dodging stone debris and accompanied by two guards, they finally arrived at their rooms. The guards having left, Zelda then told Link:
"You are here at home. Free to return or leave, I do not want to force you to anything. If you ever need to speak, do not hesitate to ask to enter the castle. I will make sure that the guards let you enter. And if you ever need to consult the kingdom's archives I authorize you to access it. After all, it's your right to know your own story. "
Link nodded in agreement, then, with these words, everyone returned to his apartments and it took little time for them to fall asleep. Despite the tiredness, their sleep was agitated. Link, like Zelda, could not sleep well, constantly rethinking about this whole story. Everything seemed so unreal. He had a lot of questions. He always wondered who this spirit was who guided him and why the Master Sword chose him ... He wondered if all of this was a dream.
The next day, after a needed night's sleep, Link took the direction of the forest of Firone to put the Master Sword back in its base. As for Zelda, she stayed at the castle to resume her role as sovereign and help the kingdom gradually emerge from this crisis. When Link arrived at the ruins of the Temple of Time, he felt that there was presence. This feeling was strange and unknown to him. He turned several times to make sure that a child of the woods was not playing him a bad trick, however, nothing.
Thus, he was again in front of the base of the sword which consecrated him Hero of this land. He felt a great emotion invading him, because the fact that he puts back the sword gave him a sense of liberation, that everything was finally over and that he would be able to return to a normal life again. It was then that with a solemn gesture, he brandished the purifying blade towards the sky and planted it again in its base.
"Everything is finally over" he said to himself. Now, Link was free to do what he wanted. He knew he could count on the people of his hometown and his friends and that even Zelda supported him. Thus, he remained a few moments meditating on the sword, wondering how he got there. He was now looking for answers. Then he resumed his journey, but before leaving the temple, this strange presence was felt again. Link paused for a moment and a voice was heard. It was a somewhat strange and feminine voice. Link turned around and looked for where this voice could come from. His gaze stopped on the Master Sword. The voice seemed to comes from there. Link thought that it was perhaps only his imagination, or that the spirits of the forest played him a trick. However, this voice was so solemn and seemed to mean something, something that can be said in two words, like a Thank you.
